    How your gas bill is structured

    A residential gas bill in the US and most other markets consists of three main cost layers. The commodity charge (fuel cost) covers the actual natural gas you burn - this is the price per cubic meter or therm multiplied by your consumption. The distribution charge is a per-unit fee paid to the company that owns the pipeline network delivering gas to your home. Finally, fixed fees (also called standing charges, customer charges or meter fees) are flat monthly amounts you pay even if you use zero gas. Understanding this structure is the first step toward controlling your gas costs.

    How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Find your gas consumption - check your latest bill for monthly usage in cubic meters (m3). If your bill shows therms or CCF, convert first: 1 therm is roughly 2.83 m3, 1 CCF is about 2.83 m3.
    2. Select the season - choose "Winter" if this is a heating-season bill (November through March), "Summer" for non-heating months (May through September) or "Average" for a year-round estimate. This affects the annual projection only.
    3. Enter the gas price per m3 - look for the commodity charge or supply charge on your bill. This is the rate per unit of gas consumed, not including delivery.
    4. Enter the variable distribution fee - find the distribution or delivery charge per unit on your bill. This is separate from the gas commodity price.
    5. Enter fixed monthly fees - add up all flat charges on your bill: customer charge, basic service charge, meter reading fee, infrastructure surcharge. These do not change with consumption.
    6. Check the conversion factor - some bills list a volume correction factor or calorific value adjustment. If yours does, enter it. Otherwise leave at 1.000.

    FAQ

    Why is my gas bill so high in winter?
    Heating is by far the largest gas consumer in most homes, accounting for 60-80% of annual gas usage. A gas furnace running 8-12 hours a day in January can burn 10-15 m3 per day, compared to just 0.5-1.0 m3/day in summer (cooking and hot water only). The difference between a January and July bill can easily be 5-10x. If your winter bill seems disproportionately high, check your home's insulation, seal drafts around windows and doors, and ensure your furnace filter is clean - a clogged filter forces the system to run longer.
    What is the difference between therms and cubic meters?
    A therm is a unit of energy equal to 100,000 BTU. A cubic meter (m3) is a unit of volume. The relationship depends on the gas energy content: 1 therm is approximately 2.83 m3 of natural gas at standard conditions. Some US utilities bill in therms, others in CCF (centum cubic feet, where 1 CCF = 2.83 m3). This calculator uses cubic meters for universality. To convert: multiply therms by 2.83 to get m3, or divide m3 by 2.83 to get therms.
    Can I switch gas suppliers to save money?
    In deregulated states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Georgia, Illinois and others), you can choose your gas commodity supplier while keeping the same distribution company. This affects only the fuel/commodity portion of your bill - distribution fees and fixed charges stay the same. Shopping around can save $0.05-$0.30/m3 on the gas price. In regulated states, your utility sets the gas price and you cannot switch. Use this calculator to see how much of your bill is fuel vs. distribution - if fuel is the largest share, switching suppliers (where allowed) has the most impact.
    How does the annual projection work?
    The projection adjusts for seasonal consumption patterns. If you select "Average", it simply multiplies monthly by 12. If you select "Winter", it assumes this consumption level applies for 5 months and the remaining 7 months use about 40% of that amount (non-heating base load). If you select "Summer", it assumes this low consumption for 7 months and the remaining 5 months use about 2.5x more (heating season). These are approximations - your actual annual cost depends on weather severity, insulation quality and thermostat settings.
    Why do I pay fixed fees even when I use no gas?
    Fixed fees (customer charge, basic service fee) cover the cost of maintaining the gas infrastructure connected to your home: the meter, the service line, billing systems and emergency response capability. You pay these whether you use gas or not, as long as your service is active. Typical fixed fees range from $8 to $25/month. The only way to eliminate them is to disconnect gas service entirely - which only makes sense if you switch to all-electric appliances. For low-consumption months (summer), fixed fees can represent 30-50% of your total bill, making them proportionally more noticeable.
    Is natural gas cheaper than electricity for heating?
    In most US regions, natural gas heating costs 30-50% less than electric resistance heating (baseboard heaters, electric furnaces). However, modern heat pumps with COP of 2.5-4.0 can match or beat gas on operating cost, especially in mild to moderate climates. The comparison depends on local gas and electricity rates: if electricity costs less than about 3x the gas price per equivalent energy unit, a heat pump wins. In the Northeast and Midwest where gas is cheap and winters are harsh, gas furnaces remain cost-effective. In the South and Pacific Northwest, heat pumps often win.
