Months Calculator - How Many Months Between Two Dates

Not every month has the same length, so counting months between two dates takes more than simple subtraction. Enter a start and end date - get the exact difference in years, months and days, plus total months, weeks and days.

Why months are harder to count than you think

January has 31 days. February has 28 (or 29). A "month" is not a fixed unit of time, which makes the question "how many months between X and Y?" trickier than it sounds. This calculator handles the uneven lengths for you. Enter two dates, get the exact gap in years, months and leftover days - plus the total in weeks and raw days.

How to use - step by step

    1. Start date - enter the earlier date (contract start, pregnancy start, move-in date).
    2. End date - enter the later date (deadline, due date, lease expiry).
    3. Full breakdown - check the box to split the result into years, months and remaining days. Uncheck to see only total months.
    4. Read the results - the top card shows total months. Below: years/months/days grid, other units (weeks, days), and formatted dates.

    Worked examples

    January 15 to October 15
    Exactly 9 months, 0 days. (273 days, 39 weeks.)
March 1 to March 1 (next year)
12 months, 0 days - one full year regardless of leap status.
    January 31 to February 28
0 months and 28 days. February is shorter, so the month boundary never fully crosses.
    June 1, 2020 to June 1, 2025
5 years, 0 months. That is 60 months or 1,827 days (includes a leap day).
    December 20 to January 5
0 months, 16 days. The year boundary does not add an extra month.

    How the calculation works

The calculator subtracts years first, then months, then days. If the day component goes negative (e.g. from the 31st to a month with only 30 days), it borrows one month and adds back the number of days in the previous month. This matches how most legal and financial systems count contract durations.

Step Example: Jan 15 to Oct 3
    Subtract years 0 (same year)
    Subtract months Oct - Jan = 9
    Subtract days 3 - 15 = -12 (negative)
    Borrow 1 month 9 - 1 = 8 months
    Add days of September (30) -12 + 30 = 18 days

Result: 8 months and 18 days (261 total days).

Half year 6 181-184 Lease terms, visa validity
Pregnancy 9 ~280 Due date planning
    1 year 12 365-366 Annual contracts, subscriptions

    Mortgage 180-360 ~5,475-10,950 15 or 30 year home loans
Does the order of dates matter?
No. The calculator always subtracts the earlier date from the later one, regardless of which field you put them in. The result is always a positive number.
Why does January 31 to February 28 show 0 months?
Because a full "month" means reaching or passing the same day number in the next month. From the 31st, you need to reach the 31st of the next month - but February only has 28 (or 29) days. The calculator treats this as 28 days, not 1 month. This matches legal convention in most jurisdictions.
How accurate is "9 months = pregnancy"?
The medical standard is 280 days (40 weeks) from the first day of the last menstrual period. That works out to roughly 9 months and 7 days. The calculator flags a 9-month result as a fun fact, but actual due dates should come from a healthcare provider.
What is the difference between "total months" and "months" in the breakdown?
Total months converts years to months and adds them: 2 years 3 months = 27 total months. The breakdown field shows only the remainder after extracting full years: 3 months.
Can I use this for lease or contract calculations?
Yes. Enter the signing date and the expiry date. The result shows exactly how many months the contract covers. For billing purposes, most contracts count partial months as full months - this calculator shows the precise figure so you can decide how to round.
    Does it handle leap years?
Yes. The day count is calendar-accurate. February 29 is counted when it exists. The month logic treats February as 28 or 29 days depending on the year, so borrowing works correctly across leap-year boundaries.
