    Three modes, one tool

This calculator works in three modes. Difference mode finds the exact gap between two dates - broken down into years, months, weeks, and days, plus the total number of calendar days. Add mode takes a start date and moves it forward by a given number of days. Subtract mode moves it backward. You can optionally include hours and minutes for sub-day precision when calculating differences.

    What each mode returns

    Mode Input Output
Difference Two dates (+ optional times) Years, months, weeks, days, total days (+ hours/minutes if enabled)

    FAQ

Does it matter which date I enter first?
No. In difference mode, the calculator automatically determines which date is earlier and which is later. You will always get a positive result regardless of the order you enter the dates.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. February has 29 days in leap years and 28 days in regular years. The calculator uses JavaScript's built-in Date object, which handles leap years, varying month lengths, and daylight saving transitions correctly.
What does "total days" mean vs the year/month/day breakdown?
The breakdown (e.g. "2 years, 3 months, 5 days") counts calendar units, adjusting for different month lengths. "Total days" is the raw count of 24-hour periods between the two dates. Both are correct - they just express the same duration differently. For example, 365 days can also be expressed as 1 year, 0 months, 0 days (or 1 year, 0 months, 1 day in a leap year).
Can I calculate business days only?
This calculator counts all calendar days, including weekends and holidays. For a business-days-only calculation, use the Business Days Calculator (coming soon in the Date & Time category).
When should I enable hours and minutes?
Enable the time option when you need sub-day precision. For instance, calculating the duration of a work shift (8:00 to 17:30 = 9 hours 30 minutes) or tracking elapsed time between two timestamps. For most date-to-date calculations, you can leave it off.
Is there a limit on how far apart the dates can be?
The calculator works with any dates supported by the JavaScript Date object, which covers years from roughly 271,821 BCE to 275,760 CE. For practical purposes, there is no limit - you can calculate the difference between dates centuries apart.
