Age Calculator - Exact Age in Years, Months and Days

You know your birthday - but do you know your exact age?

Most people can tell you how old they are in years. Fewer can say how many months and days on top of that, or what day of the week they were born. This calculator takes your date of birth and breaks down your age into years, months, and days. It also counts the total number of days you have been alive, tells you how many days remain until your next birthday, identifies your Western zodiac sign and Chinese zodiac animal, and - if you enter a second date of birth - calculates the exact age difference between two people.

How the calculation works

The calculator subtracts the birth date from the target date (today by default). It handles month-length differences correctly: if the current day of the month is earlier than the birth day, it borrows from the previous month. Leap years (February 29) are fully supported. The result is broken into whole years, remaining months, and remaining days - no rounding, no approximation.

Practical examples

Example 1 - basic age
Born January 1, 2000. Today is June 20, 2026. Age: 26 years, 5 months, 19 days. Total days alive: 9,667. Days until next birthday: 195.

Example 2 - leap year birthday
Born February 29, 2000. On March 1, 2026, the calculator shows 26 years, 0 months, 1 day. The next birthday falls on February 28, 2027 (non-leap year).

Example 3 - age at a future date
Born July 10, 1985. "Calculate age as of" December 31, 2030. Result: 45 years, 5 months, 21 days. Useful for retirement or milestone planning.

Example 4 - age difference
Person A: April 5, 1992. Person B: November 18, 1995. Difference: First person is older by 3 years, 7 months, 13 days.

Example 5 - newborn
Born June 1, 2026. On June 20, 2026: 0 years, 0 months, 19 days. Age in days: 19. Zodiac: Gemini. Chinese zodiac: Horse.

Example 6 - same birthday
Two people born on August 12, 1990. The calculator shows: Both people are the same age.

FAQ

How does the calculator handle leap year birthdays (February 29)?

If you were born on February 29 and the current year is not a leap year, the calculator still computes your age correctly. It counts full years based on whether your birthday has passed in the current year. The "days until next birthday" will point to February 28 or March 1 depending on the year, since February 29 does not exist in non-leap years.

Can I calculate my age at a specific future or past date?

Yes. Use the "Calculate age as of" field and enter any date. For example, enter December 31, 2030 to find out how old you will be on that day. You can also enter a past date to see how old you were at that time.

What is the Chinese zodiac and how is it determined?

The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle, with each year assigned an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Your animal is determined by your birth year. Note that the Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20, so people born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal. This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar year for simplicity.

How accurate is the "age in days" calculation?

The calculator counts every calendar day between your birth date and the target date. It accounts for months of different lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years. The result is exact to the day - no rounding or averaging.

Can I compare the ages of two people?

Yes. Enter the first person's date of birth in the main field, then enter the second person's date of birth in the "Compare ages" section. The calculator will show who is older and by exactly how many years, months, and days.

Why does the calculator show 0 years for a newborn?

The calculator counts completed years. A baby born 11 months ago is 0 years old because they have not yet completed their first full year. The exact age will show something like "0 years, 11 months, 15 days" - which is more informative than rounding up.
