The number BMI misses
BMI treats all weight equally - muscle, bone, water, fat. WHR does not. It divides waist circumference by hip circumference and tells you where your body stores fat. A ratio above 0.85 for women or 0.95 for men signals elevated cardiovascular risk according to WHO guidelines. Two people with identical BMI can have wildly different WHR scores - and the one with the higher ratio faces significantly greater health risks.
WHR = 82 / 97 = 0.85 - borderline moderate risk. The calculator flags this as the upper edge of the safe zone and recommends increasing cardio frequency.
How to use this calculator - step by step
- Waist circumference - measure at the narrowest point, about 2 cm above the navel. Stand upright, exhale naturally, do not suck your stomach in. Typical values: 65-100 cm.
- Hip circumference - measure at the widest point around the buttocks. Keep the tape horizontal and snug. Typical values: 85-120 cm.
- Sex - select Female or Male. WHO thresholds differ: women below 0.80 = low risk, men below 0.90 = low risk.
- Age (optional) - after 50, fat distribution shifts toward the abdomen. The calculator adjusts recommendations accordingly.

Waist 68 cm, hips 96 cm. WHR = 68 / 96 = 0.71. Low risk. Classic pear shape with healthy subcutaneous fat distribution.
Waist 80 cm, hips 95 cm. WHR = 80 / 95 = 0.84. Moderate risk. Upper edge of the safe zone - increasing cardio from 2 to 4 sessions per week can bring it below 0.80.
Waist 102 cm, hips 100 cm. WHR = 102 / 100 = 1.02. Very high risk. The waist exceeds the hips - strong indicator of visceral fat accumulation. Medical consultation recommended.
Waist 78 cm, hips 95 cm. WHR = 78 / 95 = 0.82. Low risk. Well below the male threshold of 0.90. Proportional body shape with minimal abdominal fat.
Waist 88 cm, hips 98 cm, age 55. WHR = 88 / 98 = 0.90. High risk. The calculator adds a note for ages 50+: cholesterol and glucose checks every 6 months.
Waist 82 cm, hips 104 cm, male. WHR = 82 / 104 = 0.79. Low risk. Large hip circumference from glute and thigh muscle mass pushes the ratio down. This is where WHR outperforms BMI - the BMI might read "overweight" while WHR correctly shows low cardiovascular risk.

Measurement errors of just 2-3 cm can shift your WHR category. Follow these rules:
