    The number BMI misses

    BMI treats all weight equally - muscle, bone, water, fat. WHR does not. It divides waist circumference by hip circumference and tells you where your body stores fat. A ratio above 0.85 for women or 0.95 for men signals elevated cardiovascular risk according to WHO guidelines.     How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Waist circumference - measure at the narrowest point, about 2 cm above the navel. Stand upright, exhale naturally, do not suck your stomach in. Typical values: 65-100 cm.

    Why are thresholds different for men and women?
    Women naturally store more subcutaneous fat around the hips (for pregnancy and lactation), producing a lower WHR. Men deposit more fat viscerally around the abdominal organs. Because of this biological difference, the same WHR value has different clinical implications by sex. The WHO set the female cutoff at 0.85 and the male cutoff at 0.90 based on large epidemiological studies linking higher ratios to cardiovascular events.
    Is WHR better than BMI?
    Neither is universally "better" - they measure different things. BMI captures total weight relative to height, which is useful for large population studies. WHR captures fat distribution, which is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk. A person can have a normal BMI but a dangerous WHR if their fat concentrates around the waist. For individual health assessment, combining both gives the clearest picture.
    How fast can I improve my WHR?
    Waist circumference responds to changes in diet and exercise within 4-8 weeks. Visceral fat (the dangerous abdominal type) is metabolically active and shrinks faster than subcutaneous fat with consistent aerobic exercise and caloric deficit. A realistic target is reducing waist circumference by 1-2 cm per month. Hip circumference tends to stay more stable since it reflects bone structure and glute/thigh muscle mass.
    Does age affect WHR interpretation?
    Yes. After menopause (women) or after age 50 (men), hormonal changes cause fat to shift from hips and thighs toward the abdomen. This naturally increases WHR even without weight gain. Research shows that the cardiovascular risk thresholds should be interpreted slightly less strictly for older adults - a WHR of 0.87 at age 60 carries less relative risk than the same ratio at age 30.     What is visceral fat and why does it matter?
    Visceral fat surrounds the internal organs (liver, intestines, pancreas) inside the abdominal cavity. Unlike subcutaneous fat (the layer you can pinch), visceral fat releases inflammatory compounds and hormones that directly increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. A high WHR is the simplest non-invasive indicator of excess visceral fat. Precise measurement requires imaging (CT or MRI), but WHR correlates strongly enough for clinical screening.
    Can a muscular person have a misleading WHR?
    It is less common than with BMI, but possible. Someone with very developed oblique muscles may have a wider waist circumference that inflates the WHR. However, muscular development typically increases hip circumference too (glutes, thighs), which keeps the ratio balanced. In practice, WHR is far more reliable for muscular individuals than BMI because it measures proportion rather than absolute mass.
