    Three measurements, one formula

    The U.S. Navy developed this method because they needed a fast, reliable way to assess body composition without expensive lab equipment. The formula uses logarithmic relationships between your neck, waist and hip circumferences plus your height to estimate the density of your body - and from density, the percentage of fat tissue. Accuracy is within 3-4% of DEXA scans for most people, which makes it one of the best free alternatives to hydrostatic weighing or dual-energy X-ray.

    How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Sex - select Female or Male. The formula and healthy ranges differ: women need more essential fat for reproductive function.
    2. Weight - your current weight in kilograms. Weigh yourself in the morning before eating for consistency. Used to calculate fat mass and lean body mass in kg.
    3. Height - in centimeters, without shoes. The Navy formula uses the logarithm of your height to normalize the calculation.
    4. Neck circumference - measure just below the larynx. Keep your head straight, do not tense your neck. Typical range: 30-45 cm.
    5. Waist circumference - at the narrowest point, about 2 cm above the navel. Exhale naturally, do not suck in. Typical range: 60-110 cm.
    6. Hip circumference (women only) - at the widest point around the buttocks. Men skip this field. Typical range: 85-120 cm.

    The U.S. Navy formula

    Men BF% = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 * log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 * log10(height)) - 450
    Women BF% = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 * log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 * log10(height)) - 450

    The formula estimates body density via circumference ratios, then converts density to fat percentage using the Siri equation (BF% = 495/density - 450). All measurements must be in centimeters.

    Weight 70 kg, height 162 cm, neck 33 cm, waist 86 cm, hips 100 cm. BF = 35.3%. Fat mass: 24.7 kg. Lean mass: 45.3 kg. Category: Overweight. The high waist-to-hip difference indicates abdominal fat accumulation.

    How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?
    Studies show the Navy formula estimates body fat within 3-4% of DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) for most adults. It tends to slightly overestimate body fat in very lean individuals and slightly underestimate it in obese individuals. For tracking progress over time, it is highly reliable - the error stays consistent, so changes in your readings reflect real changes in body composition. For the highest precision, always measure at the same time of day under the same conditions.
    Why do women need hip measurement but men do not?
    Women store a larger proportion of fat around the hips and thighs (gluteofemoral region) due to estrogen. The Navy formula accounts for this by including hip circumference in the female equation. In men, abdominal fat dominates, so the waist-to-neck ratio alone captures the relevant distribution. If a woman omits the hip measurement, the formula cannot produce an accurate result.
    Is body fat percentage better than BMI?
    They measure different things. BMI uses only weight and height - quick but unable to distinguish muscle from fat. A bodybuilder with 10% body fat can register as "obese" on BMI. Body fat percentage directly estimates how much of your weight is adipose tissue. For individual health assessment, body fat is more informative. For large-scale population screening, BMI remains useful because it requires no measurements beyond a scale and a ruler.
    What is lean body mass (LBM)?
    Lean body mass is your total weight minus fat mass. It includes muscles, bones, organs, water and connective tissue. LBM is a useful metric for athletes and dieters: when losing weight, the goal is usually to preserve or increase LBM while reducing fat mass. If your weight drops but LBM also drops significantly, you may be losing muscle along with fat - a signal to increase protein intake and add resistance training.
    How fast can body fat percentage change?
    A realistic rate of fat loss is 0.5-1% body fat per month with a moderate caloric deficit and consistent exercise. Losing fat faster usually means losing muscle too. For someone at 25% body fat aiming for 18%, expect 7-14 months of sustained effort. Track your measurements monthly rather than weekly - daily fluctuations in hydration and food volume can swing the tape measure by 1-2 cm and distort short-term readings.
    Can I use this calculator if I am under 18?
    The U.S. Navy formula was validated on adults aged 18 and above. Body composition in children and adolescents changes rapidly with growth and puberty, so adult reference ranges do not apply. For young people, pediatric body fat charts based on skinfold measurements or DEXA are more appropriate. Consult a pediatrician or sports medicine specialist for accurate youth body composition assessment.
