    Walking burns calories too - the table most apps get wrong

    Most calorie trackers treat a walk-run session as either "running" or "walking." Neither is right. A 30-minute Galloway-style session with 20 minutes of running at 6:00 min/km and 10 minutes of walking at 10:00 min/km burns a different number of calories than 30 minutes of pure running or 30 minutes of pure walking. The MET values are different for each phase, and the math only works when you calculate them separately.

    This calculator splits your workout into running and walking phases, applies the correct MET coefficient from the Compendium of Physical Activities to each, and gives you the real combined total - plus distance, average pace and per-kilometer burn rate.

    How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Enter your weight - heavier bodies burn more calories at any pace. Weight is the single strongest variable in the MET equation.
    2. Enter total running time - add up all running intervals. If you do 5 x 3 minutes, enter 15.
    3. Select running pace - from slow jog (7:00 min/km) to hard run (4:30 min/km). Each bracket maps to a specific MET value.
    4. Enter total walking time - add up all walking intervals. If you do 5 x 2 minutes, enter 10.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does walk-run burn fewer calories than continuous running?
    Yes, but less than you might think. The running phases still use high MET values. A 30-minute session with 20 min run / 10 min walk burns roughly 75-85% of the calories of 30 minutes of continuous running at the same pace. The trade-off: walk-run is sustainable for beginners who cannot run 30 minutes straight, so the total weekly volume - and calorie burn - is often higher.
    What is the Galloway method?
    Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run method alternates running and walking intervals throughout the entire workout. Common ratios: 3 min run / 1 min walk for intermediates, 1 min run / 1 min walk for beginners. The key insight: the walking breaks prevent glycogen depletion and muscle damage, allowing runners to cover more total distance per week with less injury risk. Many marathon finishers use this method successfully.
    How accurate are MET-based calorie estimates?
    MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities are population averages with +/- 10-15% individual variation. Factors that shift accuracy: fitness level (trained runners are more efficient, burning slightly fewer calories per km), terrain (hills add 5-15%), wind, and temperature. For weight management, this level of accuracy is more than sufficient - the trend matters more than the exact number.
    Does body weight really matter that much?
    Yes. Calorie burn scales linearly with weight. An 90 kg person burns 50% more calories than a 60 kg person at the same pace and duration. This is pure physics: moving a heavier body requires more energy. The formula is calories = MET x weight (kg) x hours, so weight is a direct multiplier.
    Is brisk walking better than slow jogging for weight loss?
    Slow jogging (MET 8.0) burns roughly 60% more per minute than brisk walking (MET 5.0). However, walking is lower impact and can be sustained for much longer. For someone who can walk 60 minutes but only jog 20, the total calorie burn may be similar: 60 min x 5.0 MET = 300 MET-min vs 20 min x 8.0 = 160 MET-min. The best exercise is the one you actually do consistently.
    What is the EPOC effect for walk-run sessions?
    EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) adds 5-15% additional calories after the workout. Higher intensity = more EPOC. Walk-run sessions produce less EPOC than continuous high-intensity running but more than pure walking. This calculator does not include EPOC - the numbers shown are exercise-only burn. For practical purposes, you can add 5-10% mentally for a more complete picture.
