Three tests, one number - your aerobic ceiling
VO2max is the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per minute per kilogram of body weight. It is the single best measure of cardiovascular fitness. Lab testing (cardiopulmonary exercise test with a mask and gas analyzer) costs $150-400 and takes an hour. This calculator gives you a solid estimate for free using one of three field tests: the Cooper 12-minute run, the Rockport 1-mile walk, or a formula based on age, sex, weight and activity level.
How to estimate your VO2max - step by step
- Choose a test method - Cooper test is the most accurate field test but requires 12 minutes of all-out running. Rockport is a walking test, suitable for beginners. Age-based needs no physical test at all.
- Select your sex - classification tables differ by sex. Men average 15-20% higher VO2max values than women at the same fitness level.
- Enter your age - VO2max peaks around age 20-25 and declines roughly 1% per year without training. The calculator uses age-specific norms.
- Enter your weight - VO2max is expressed per kilogram. Two people with the same absolute oxygen uptake will have different VO2max values if they weigh differently.
- Enter test-specific data - distance for Cooper, walk time and heart rate for Rockport, or activity level for the age-based estimate.
- Read your results - VO2max in ml/kg/min, fitness classification, percentile rank among peers, and a training improvement estimate.
The three test methods compared
| Method | What you do | Accuracy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooper test | Run as far as possible in 12 minutes on flat ground | +/- 3-5 | Runners, fit individuals |
| Rockport walk | Walk 1 mile (1.6 km) as fast as possible, measure time and heart rate | +/- 5-6 | Beginners, older adults, rehab patients |
| Age-based | Answer questions about age, sex, weight, activity level | +/- 7-10 | Quick screening, cannot exercise |
VO2max classification by age - males
| Age | Very low | Low | Average | Good | Very good | Elite |

| 30-39 | < 23 | 23-31 | 31-40 | 40-50 | 50-58 | > 58 |
| 40-49 | < 21 | 21-29 | 29-38 | 38-48 | 48-56 | > 56 |
| 50-59 | < 19 | 19-27 | 27-36 | 36-44 | 44-52 | > 52 |
| 60-69 | < 17 | 17-25 | 25-33 | 33-41 | 41-49 | > 49 |
| 70+ | < 15 | 15-23 | 23-30 | 30-38 | 38-46 | > 46 |
Real-world examples
VO2max: 42.3 ml/kg/min. Classification: Good (42-52 range for 20-29). Percentile: ~50-75. Typical for someone who runs 3x/week.
VO2max: 29.8 ml/kg/min. Classification: Average (22-30 range for 50-59 females). Good result for a walking-only exercise routine.
VO2max: 51.3 ml/kg/min. Classification: Elite (> 52 range for 20-29 females). University-level endurance athlete range.
VO2max: 30.8 ml/kg/min. Classification: Average (29-38 for 40-49 males). Weight is pulling the number down - losing 10 kg could add 3-4 ml/kg/min.
VO2max: 60.2 ml/kg/min. Classification: Elite (> 58 for 30-39 males). Competitive marathon runner territory.
