    VO2max is the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per minute per kilogram of body weight. It is the single best measure of cardiovascular fitness. Lab testing (cardiopulmonary exercise test with a mask and gas analyzer) costs $150-400 and takes an hour. This calculator gives you a solid estimate for free using one of three field tests: the Cooper 12-minute run, the Rockport 1-mile walk, or a formula based on age, sex, weight and activity level.

    How to estimate your VO2max - step by step

    1. Choose a test method - Cooper test is the most accurate field test but requires 12 minutes of all-out running. Rockport is a walking test, suitable for beginners. Age-based needs no physical test at all.
    2. Select your sex - classification tables differ by sex. Men average 15-20% higher VO2max values than women at the same fitness level.
    3. Enter your age - VO2max peaks around age 20-25 and declines roughly 1% per year without training. The calculator uses age-specific norms.
    4. Enter your weight - VO2max is expressed per kilogram. Two people with the same absolute oxygen uptake will have different VO2max values if they weigh differently.

    Common questions about VO2max

    What is a good VO2max for my age?
    It depends on sex and age group. For a 30-year-old male, average is 31-40 ml/kg/min, good is 40-50, and elite is above 58. For a 30-year-old female, average is 26-34, good is 34-42, and elite is above 50. The calculator shows your exact classification in the results table.
    How accurate is the Cooper test compared to lab testing?
    The Cooper test correlates with lab VO2max at about r = 0.90, with a standard error of 3-5 ml/kg/min. That means if the lab says 45, the Cooper test might give you 40-50. The Rockport walk test is less accurate (+/- 5-6) and the age-based formula is the roughest (+/- 7-10). For tracking progress over time, any method works as long as you use the same one consistently.
    Can I improve my VO2max after 40?
    Yes. While VO2max naturally declines with age, untrained individuals can still improve by 15-20% with structured training. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that previously sedentary 60-70 year olds improved VO2max by 17% after 6 months of endurance training. The rate of improvement is slower than at 20, but the health benefits are arguably greater.
    What is the difference between VO2max and lactate threshold?
    VO2max is the absolute ceiling of oxygen consumption - you cannot go higher regardless of effort. Lactate threshold (LT) is the intensity at which lactate accumulates faster than it can be cleared, typically at 75-85% of VO2max in trained athletes. You can race at lactate threshold for 30-60 minutes, but you can only sustain VO2max intensity for 6-8 minutes. Both are trainable, but lactate threshold responds faster to training and is arguably more important for endurance performance.
    How often should I retest VO2max?
    Every 8-12 weeks during a training block. Retesting more frequently than every 6 weeks is unlikely to show measurable change. Use the same test method and conditions (time of day, surface, weather, warm-up) for valid comparisons. VO2max can fluctuate by 2-3 ml/kg/min day to day due to hydration, sleep, and fatigue.
    Does body weight affect VO2max?
    Directly. VO2max is expressed as ml of oxygen per kg per minute. If two people consume the same absolute volume of oxygen (say, 3.5 L/min), the 70 kg person has a VO2max of 50 while the 90 kg person has 38.9. Losing excess body fat - without losing fitness - will increase your relative VO2max. This is why elite distance runners tend to be lean: less weight to carry means a higher per-kg score.
