The invisible ceiling your heart must not cross
During pregnancy, your resting heart rate rises by 10-25 bpm because blood volume increases by up to 50%. At the same time, the safe ceiling for exercise drops - especially in the third trimester. The result is a narrower safe zone that changes with each trimester, your age and your pre-pregnancy fitness. This calculator uses ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) guidelines to compute a personalized range: a floor based on minimum effective intensity, and a ceiling you should never exceed.
The talk test remains the simplest real-time check: if you cannot speak in short sentences while exercising, your heart rate is too high. The calculator shows where this threshold falls for your specific numbers.
How to use the Pregnancy Heart Rate Calculator - step by step
- Age (years) - your current age. Used to calculate theoretical maximum heart rate (220 - age).
- Trimester - select 1st (weeks 1-12), 2nd (weeks 13-26) or 3rd (weeks 27-40). Each has different intensity limits.
- Resting heart rate (bpm) - measure in the morning, sitting quietly for 5 minutes. During pregnancy, 70-100 bpm is the typical range.
- Pre-pregnancy activity level - low, moderate or high. Women who trained regularly before pregnancy can safely maintain higher exercise intensity.
- Read your results - safe heart rate range (min-max bpm), talk test threshold, absolute limit, resting HR assessment and trimester-specific activity recommendations.
Safe heart rate limits by trimester
ACOG-based guidelines adjusted by pre-pregnancy fitness level. Highly fit women get a wider safe zone; beginners get a more conservative range.
| Trimester | Low fitness | Moderate fitness | High fitness | Absolute limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (weeks 1-12) | 50-65% HRmax | 50-70% HRmax | 50-75% HRmax | 140-155 bpm |
| 2nd (weeks 13-26) | 50-60% HRmax | 50-65% HRmax | 50-70% HRmax | 135-150 bpm |
| 3rd (weeks 27-40) | 45-55% HRmax | 45-60% HRmax | 45-65% HRmax | 130-140 bpm |
Resting heart rate changes during pregnancy
| Trimester | Typical RHR increase | Why it happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1st trimester | +10-15 bpm | Hormonal changes (progesterone) cause blood vessels to relax, heart compensates with faster rate |
| 2nd trimester | +15-20 bpm | Blood volume increases by 30-40%, placenta demands more blood flow |
| 3rd trimester | +20-25 bpm | Blood volume peaks at ~50% above normal, uterus presses on major blood vessels |
Practical examples
HRmax: 190. Safe range: 95-133 bpm. Limit: 145 bpm. Talk test: 114 bpm.
HRmax: 185. Safe range: 83-102 bpm. Limit: 130 bpm. Walk and prenatal yoga recommended.
HRmax: 192. Safe range: 96-134 bpm. Limit: 150 bpm. Can continue swimming and cycling.
HRmax: 180. Safe range: 90-126 bpm. Limit: 145 bpm. RHR assessment: normal for pregnancy.
HRmax: 195. Safe range: 88-127 bpm. Limit: 140 bpm. RHR elevated but normal in 3rd trimester.
