    Is 140 bpm safe during pregnancy?
    The old "never exceed 140 bpm" rule dates from 1985 ACOG guidelines that have since been updated. Current guidelines use individualized ranges based on age, trimester and fitness. For a 25-year-old with high pre-pregnancy fitness in the 1st trimester, 140 bpm may be perfectly safe. For a 40-year-old beginner in the 3rd trimester, it may be too high. The calculator shows your personal limit.
    Why does resting heart rate increase during pregnancy?
    Blood volume increases by up to 50% during pregnancy. Your heart must pump this larger volume to supply both your body and the placenta. The main mechanism is increased stroke volume and heart rate. Progesterone also causes blood vessels to dilate, which drops blood pressure slightly and triggers a compensatory rise in heart rate. An increase of 10-25 bpm is considered normal.
    What is the talk test?
    The talk test is the simplest way to monitor exercise intensity without a heart rate monitor. If you can speak in short sentences while exercising, you are in the safe zone. If you can only say single words or are gasping, your intensity is too high. ACOG recommends the talk test as a primary intensity guide during pregnancy, especially when heart rate monitors are unavailable.
    Can I exercise in the third trimester?
    Yes, with modifications. Walking, swimming, aqua aerobics, prenatal yoga and Kegel exercises are safe for most women throughout the entire pregnancy. In the 3rd trimester, avoid lying flat on your back (the uterus compresses the vena cava), sudden position changes, jumping, and contact sports. The safe heart rate range narrows, so reduce intensity by about 15-20% compared to the 1st trimester.
    When should I stop exercising immediately?
    Stop immediately and contact your doctor if you experience: vaginal bleeding, chest pain, dizziness or feeling faint, headache, calf pain or swelling (deep vein thrombosis risk), uterine contractions, fluid leaking from the vagina, or shortness of breath before starting exercise. These are ACOG-listed warning signs that require medical evaluation.
    Does exercise during pregnancy affect the baby's heart rate?
    Short-term moderate exercise causes a brief increase in fetal heart rate of about 10-25 bpm, which is normal and not harmful. The fetal heart rate returns to baseline within 15-20 minutes after exercise. Studies show that regular moderate exercise during pregnancy is associated with better fetal heart rate variability, which is a sign of a healthy autonomic nervous system.
