The invisible calories your glass never shows
Ethanol packs 7.1 kcal per gram - nearly twice the caloric density of protein or carbohydrate, and only a step below pure fat. A standard pint of lager delivers around 215 kcal, roughly the same as a glazed doughnut, yet no nutritional label on the bottle tells you that. This calculator takes the drink type, volume and number of servings, then shows the total calories split into ethanol calories and residual sugar/extract calories, alongside everyday food comparisons.
How to use this calculator - step by step
- Type of drink - select from 16 preset options (lager, IPA, red/white wine, vodka, whisky, rum, gin, tequila, liqueur, cider and more) or choose "Other" to enter a custom ABV.
- Alcohol content (%) - only appears when you select "Other". Enter the ABV from the bottle label.
- Volume (ml) - enter the total volume of one serving. Beer bottle: 330-500 ml. Wine glass: 150 ml. Spirit shot: 25-50 ml.
- Number of servings - optional. If you had 3 pints, enter 3 here. The calculator multiplies everything accordingly.
- Read the results: total kcal, ethanol grams, calorie source breakdown and food equivalents.
Where do alcohol calories come from?
Not all calories in a drink are from ethanol. Beer contains malt extract (15-20 kcal/100 ml extra), liqueurs carry added sugar (25-35 kcal/100 ml), and sweet wines can have 20-40 g of residual sugar per liter.
| Calorie source | kcal/g | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ethanol | 7.1 | 50 ml vodka = 15.8 g ethanol = 112 kcal |
| Carbohydrates (sugar) | 4.0 | 50 ml liqueur with 10 g sugar = 40 kcal extra |
| Malt extract (beer) | ~3.5 | 500 ml beer with 4% extract = ~70 kcal extra |
