    How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Surface type - pick wall, ceiling or attic. Ceilings need denser spacing because the board hangs against gravity.
    2. Width - horizontal dimension of the surface in metres. Include window/door openings; the waste allowance compensates.
    3. Height / Length - wall height or ceiling/attic run. Standard European room height: 2.5-2.8 m.
    4. Horizontal spacing - gap between fasteners across the surface. Walls: 60 cm typical. Ceilings: 40 cm recommended.
    5. Vertical spacing - gap between fastener rows. Same logic as horizontal: tighter for ceilings, looser for walls.
    6. Waste allowance - extra fasteners for breakage. 10% is a safe default.
    7. Read results: total fasteners, packages (21 pcs each), screws and a visual grid preview.

    Worth knowing

    No thermal bridges. Metal stud frames conduct heat straight through the insulation layer. Disc anchor fasteners (like Atlas M-System 3G) are polypropylene with a small steel bushing - thermal conductivity is negligible compared to a full CD/UD profile grid.
    Works with mineral wool and EPS (including Atlas M-System 3G and similar disc anchor systems). The fastener passes through rigid EPS boards or semi-rigid mineral wool batts and anchors into the masonry or concrete behind. Soft wool batts may need a backing board or firmer batt at the fastener points.
    One package (21 pcs, e.g. Atlas M-System 3G) covers about 4 m2 at 60x40 cm spacing. That is the most common wall configuration. For a ceiling at 40x40 cm, the same package covers roughly 3.4 m2. Always round up to full packages.
    Tilt angle adjustment of up to 27 degrees. The fastener head can pivot, making it straightforward to mount boards on uneven walls or sloped attic surfaces without shimming.

    Practical examples

    Example 1: Attic - two slopes 2 x 8 m2 + ceiling 12 m2, spacing 40x40 cm
    Total 28 m2 x 6.25 = 175 fasteners + 10% = 193 pcs = 10 packages
    Example 2: External wall insulation from inside, 5 x 2.5 m, 100 mm EPS, spacing 60x40 cm
    Area 12.5 m2, grid 9 x 7 = 63 fasteners + 10% = 70 pcs = 4 packages (120 mm variant)
    Example 3: Garage ceiling 6 x 4 m, spacing 40x40 cm
    Area 24 m2 x 6.25 = 150 fasteners + 10% = 165 pcs = 8 packages
    Example 4: Small bedroom gable wall 3.5 x 2.5 m, spacing 60x40 cm
    Area 8.75 m2, grid 7 x 7 = 49 fasteners = 3 packages (160 mm variant). Quick install, no metal frame.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    Do disc anchors replace metal stud framing?
    Yes. The fasteners pass through insulation (EPS or mineral wool) and anchor into the masonry or concrete wall/ceiling. Plasterboard screws directly into the fastener heads. This eliminates CD/UD metal profiles entirely. Benefits: fewer materials, faster installation, and no thermal bridging from metal studs conducting heat through the insulation layer.
    What spacing should I use for ceilings?
    Ceilings carry the full weight of the plasterboard against gravity, so they need tighter spacing. Use 40 x 40 cm (6.25 fasteners/m2) for standard 12.5 mm boards. For double-layer boards or heavier cladding, consider 40 x 30 cm. Walls can use wider spacing - 60 x 40 cm is standard for single-layer 12.5 mm plasterboard.
    How do I choose the right fastener length?
    Fastener length = insulation thickness + 35-40 mm anchoring depth + 12.5 mm for the plasterboard. Example: 100 mm insulation needs the 120 mm variant (100 + 35 - the protruding head accommodates the board). When in doubt, go one size longer - the system allows distance adjustment.
    Do disc anchors work with mineral wool?
    Yes. Disc anchor systems (including Atlas M-System 3G) work with both rigid EPS and semi-rigid mineral wool boards. For mineral wool, the fastener must penetrate the full insulation thickness and anchor at least 35-40 mm into the substrate. Soft wool batts may need firmer insulation pads at fastener points to prevent the board from dimpling between supports.
    Can I hang heavy objects on a disc-anchor mounted wall?
    Light items (pictures, shelves under 5 kg) mount directly into the plasterboard with spring toggles. Medium loads (5-30 kg - TV brackets, kitchen cabinets) need screws that reach the fastener heads or the masonry behind the insulation. Anything over 30 kg must anchor into the structural wall through the insulation.
    Are disc anchors cheaper than metal profiles?
    For material cost alone, Disc anchor systems (such as Atlas M-System 3G) and metal profiles are comparable. The real savings come from labour - installation is roughly twice as fast because there is no frame to build. On a typical 30 m2 attic project, the labour saving alone can offset the entire fastener cost. The system also avoids thermal bridges, which means better energy performance without extra insulation thickness.
