What this calculator does

Crypto prices move fast. This converter pulls live data from CoinGecko (aggregated across 600+ exchanges, refreshed every 2 minutes) and lets you convert between five major cryptocurrencies and US dollars in either direction. You get the current USD price, the 24-hour percentage change and a plain-language summary of your conversion.

Prices shown are mid-market spot prices, not exchange-specific. Your actual buy/sell price on any given exchange will differ by the exchange's fee (typically 0.1-1.5%) and the bid-ask spread.

How to convert - step by step

Amount - enter how much you want to convert. For selling crypto, enter the coin amount (e.g. 0.25 BTC). For buying, enter the USD amount (e.g. 1000).

Buying vs selling - what the numbers mean

Buying (USD to Crypto)

You enter a dollar amount and the calculator tells you how many coins you can buy at the current price.

Example: $1,000 at a BTC price of $62,000 buys 0.01612903 BTC (roughly 1.6 million satoshi).

Selling (Crypto to USD)

You enter a coin amount and the calculator shows the dollar value at the current spot price.

Example: 0.5 ETH at $3,400 is worth $1,700.00. Your exchange will subtract a fee (typically 0.1-0.5%).

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Where do the prices come from?

Prices are fetched from CoinGecko API, which aggregates data from over 600 cryptocurrency exchanges worldwide. The price shown is a volume-weighted average across all tracked exchanges, updated every 2 minutes. CoinGecko is one of the most widely used crypto data providers, referenced by Bloomberg, Reuters and major financial outlets.

Why is the price here different from my exchange?

Each exchange has its own order book with slightly different prices. The CoinGecko price is a weighted average across hundreds of exchanges. Your specific exchange (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, etc.) may show a price that is 0.1-1% higher or lower, depending on liquidity and regional demand. Additionally, when you place a market order, you pay the ask price (buying) or receive the bid price (selling), which differ from the mid-market price shown here.

What does the 24h change show?

The percentage change in the USD price over the last 24 hours. A green up arrow means the coin gained value, a red down arrow means it lost value. Crypto is highly volatile - daily swings of 3-10% are common, and 20-30% moves happen during major market events. The 24h change helps you see whether you are buying into a rising or falling market, but it says nothing about what happens next.

What is a satoshi?

A satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin: 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshi. It is named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. When the calculator shows a result like 0.01612903 BTC, that equals 1,612,903 satoshi. Thinking in satoshi can make small Bitcoin amounts feel more tangible than fractions of a coin.

Are crypto gains taxable?

In most jurisdictions, yes. In the US, crypto is treated as property - selling, swapping or spending crypto triggers a capital gains event. Short-term gains (held under 1 year) are taxed at your income rate; long-term gains at 0-20%. In the EU, rules vary by country - Germany exempts gains after 1 year of holding, while France taxes at a flat 30%. Always consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.

Can I lose all my money in crypto?

Yes. Cryptocurrencies are speculative assets with no guaranteed floor price. Bitcoin has dropped over 80% from its peak multiple times in its history (2011, 2014, 2018, 2022). Smaller coins have gone to zero entirely. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose, and diversify beyond crypto. The calculator shows current prices, not predictions.
