The average adult reads 200-250 words per minute in their native language. English words average 4.7 characters, which is shorter than most European languages, so the same processing speed shows up as a higher WPM in English.

Text difficulty and real WPM

Not every text reads at the same pace. A research paper needs more attention than a novel. The calculator applies difficulty multipliers:

Fun facts about reading speed

Subvocalisation caps you near speech. Saying words in your head ties reading to the pace of inner speech, roughly 200-300 WPM.

Speed above 600 is really scanning. Comprehension typically falls to 50-60%, so it works for gist, not detail.

A finger pacer helps. Guiding your eyes with a finger or pen can add 10-30% to your pace on the same text.

Twenty minutes a day adds up. At 250 WPM, 20 minutes daily is about 20 average novels a year.

How do I measure my reading speed correctly?

Pick a text with a known word count. Start a stopwatch, read at your normal pace with comprehension, then stop. Enter the word count and the time. For a reliable figure, repeat 3-5 times with different texts and take the average.

What is a good reading speed for an adult?

The average adult reads 200-250 WPM in a native language. Students and knowledge workers reach 250-350 WPM. Below 150 WPM is slow (common when reading aloud); above 400 WPM is fast reading.

A standard book page holds about 250 words. At 250 WPM you read 60 pages an hour on light text. At 200 WPM on dense text (60% multiplier) that falls to 29 pages an hour. The calculator reports this automatically.
