Your heart rate at 5:00 min/km on a 12-degree morning is 145 bpm. That same 145 bpm at 32 degrees and 75% humidity only produces 5:27 min/km. The effort is identical. The pace is not. Runners who ignore this either blow up mid-race or finish demoralized, convinced they lost fitness overnight.
Four factors shift your pace: temperature, humidity, wind and surface. This calculator quantifies each one in seconds per kilometer, then adds them up. The result: a pace target that matches your actual effort, not the number on your watch from last Tuesday's perfect-weather run.
How to use this calculator - step by step
- Enter your baseline pace (minutes and seconds) - this is your pace in ideal conditions: 10-15 C, no wind, flat asphalt. If you race at 5:30, enter 5 and 30.
- Enter the temperature - current air temperature in Celsius. The optimal range is 10-15 C with zero correction. Below 0 C and above 20 C both add seconds.
- Select humidity level - high humidity blocks sweat evaporation, so your body cannot cool itself efficiently. At the same heart rate, pace drops.
- Select wind strength - headwind adds drag. Tailwind does not compensate equally, so the net effect on an out-and-back run is always negative.
- Select surface type - soft surfaces absorb energy on every stride. Sand adds up to 25 seconds per km.
- Read the adjusted pace - the corrected pace plus a factor-by-factor breakdown showing exactly where each second comes from.
