How long common texts take to read

Times below assume an average reader at 250 words per minute, with 250 words per page:

Text Words Pages Time at 250 WPM
    Web article 1,000 4 4 min
    College essay 5,000 20 20 min
    Master thesis 20,000 80 1 h 20 min
    Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 77,000 308 5 h 8 min
    Average adult novel 90,000 360 6 h
    Academic textbook 150,000 600 10 h light / 16 h 40 min dense
The Lord of the Rings (trilogy) 480,000 1,920 32 h

Scenarios - how readers use this

The exam crammer: a student has a 400-page textbook to read before finals, at 250 WPM on medium text, in 45-minute sessions.
    Result: 8 h 20 min, 12 sessions, about 33 pages a session.
The book club member: a 90,000-word novel to finish before the next meeting, reading 30 minutes a day at 250 WPM.
Result: 6 h total, 12 sessions, so 12 days at that pace.
The paralegal: a 12,000-word contract at 300 WPM, dense text (60% multiplier).
    Result: effective 180 WPM, about 1 h 7 min, 3 sessions of 30 minutes.
The commuter: a 320-page novel read 60 minutes a day at 250 WPM on light text.
    Result: 5 h 20 min, 6 sessions, so 6 days of commuting.
The speed reader: a 30,000-word report at 600 WPM on medium text.
    Result: effective 480 WPM, about 1 h 3 min.
The parent: a 240-page middle-grade book read aloud at 150 WPM in 15-minute bedtime sessions.
    Result: 6 h 40 min, 27 sessions, about 9 pages a night.

    Text difficulty and effective speed

A statute reads slower than a thriller. The calculator adjusts your speed with a difficulty multiplier:

Text type Multiplier Effective WPM (base 250) Examples
Light 100% 250 Fiction, blog, news
Medium 80% 200 Textbook, report, documentation
Dense 60% 150 Science, law, medicine, math

    FAQ - frequently asked questions

How many words are on a book page?
A standard paperback page holds about 250 words. A single-spaced Letter page in 12 pt is closer to 500 words. The calculator uses 250 words per page, the publishing-industry standard.
Why is my real reading time longer than the estimate?
The estimate is continuous reading with no breaks. In practice you add eye-rest breaks every 20-30 minutes, distractions, rereading hard passages and note-taking. Real time runs 10-30% longer than the calculated figure.
What reading session length is best?
Focus research points to 25-50-minute sessions (the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off). Light text is comfortable at 45-60 minutes; dense material (science, law) does better in shorter 20-30-minute blocks with breaks to absorb it.
How many pages a day to finish a book in a month?
It depends on length. A typical 300-page novel needs 10 pages a day; a 600-page tome needs 20. At 250 WPM, 10 pages takes about 10 minutes and 20 pages about 20. Use the Pages Per Day Calculator for an exact deadline plan.
How do I estimate audiobook length?
Audiobooks are narrated at a fixed pace, usually 150-160 WPM. At 1.5x that is 225-240 WPM and at 2x it is 300-320 WPM. A typical 90,000-word novel runs about 9-10 hours at normal speed and 5 hours at 2x.
Do e-books and print take the same time to read?
At the same word count, nearly. Studies show a small difference, around 3-5% slower on screens, growing with longer texts and poor lighting. E-ink readers (Kindle, Kobo) sit closer to print than LCD screens.
