    How to use - step by step

    1. Front pressure (PSI) - read the number from the driver-door sticker or owner manual. Typical range: 30-36 PSI for sedans, 35-44 PSI for SUVs and trucks.
    2. Rear pressure (PSI) - usually 1-4 PSI lower than front on sedans, sometimes equal or higher on rear-heavy SUVs.
    3. Number of people - select from 1 (driver only) to 5 (full car). Each person adds roughly 165 lb of load.
    4. Cargo (lb) - enter the weight of luggage, equipment or anything in the trunk. Leave at 0 if empty.
    5. Season / temperature - cold air contracts, dropping tire pressure. The calculator adds a compensation factor.
    6. Planned driving speed - sustained highway speeds heat the tires more, requiring a small upward adjustment.

    Common mistakes

    Checking pressure after driving. Always measure on cold tires - before driving or after sitting for 3+ hours. Hot tires read 3-6 PSI higher.
    Using the number on the tire sidewall. The sidewall shows maximum pressure the tire can handle, not the recommended pressure for your car.
    Ignoring seasonal changes. A tire at 32 PSI on a 90F day reads about 28 PSI on a 30F morning. That 4 PSI drop increases wear and fuel use.
    Same pressure front and rear under load. Cargo sits over the rear axle. With 200+ lb in the trunk, the rear needs more PSI than the front.

    How much does underinflation affect fuel economy?
    Every 1 PSI below the recommended pressure increases fuel consumption by about 0.2%. Running 6 PSI low wastes roughly 1.2% of your fuel. On a 400-mile tank that is about 5 extra miles of fuel burned doing nothing.
    Can I exceed the door sticker pressure?
    Yes, as long as you stay below the tire sidewall maximum (usually 44-51 PSI for passenger tires). Adding 3-6 PSI above the sticker value for heavy loads or cold weather is standard practice.
    Should I adjust tire pressure for towing a trailer?
    Yes. The trailer tongue weight (typically 10-15% of the trailer gross weight) presses down on the rear axle. Add 3-5 PSI to rear tires when towing. Check your owner manual for the specific full-load pressure.
    How often should I check tire pressure?
