Same wheel, different number on the speedometer
You ordered 225/45 R17 to replace 205/55 R16 and a week later your speedometer reads 100 km/h while you are actually doing 97.8. The tires look the same, the diameter is almost identical, but the circumference shifted by 2.2% - and that 2.2% is now permanently baked into every speed reading, every odometer tick and every gear ratio. Comparing tire sizes before you buy is the one check that catches this problem in 30 seconds rather than at the inspection station.
How to use this calculator
- Tire 1 width - enter the first number from the sidewall of your current tire in millimeters (e.g. 205).
- Tire 1 aspect ratio - enter the second number, the sidewall height as a percentage of width (e.g. 55).
- Tire 1 rim diameter - enter the number after R in inches (e.g. 16).
- Tire 2 width - enter the width of the tire you want to compare (e.g. 225).
- Tire 2 aspect ratio - enter the aspect ratio of the candidate tire (e.g. 45).
- Tire 2 rim diameter - enter the rim size for tire 2 (e.g. 17), then click Compare Tires.
You ordered 225/45 R17 to replace 205/55 R16 and your speedometer now reads 2.2% fast. At an indicated 100 km/h you are actually doing 97.8. That gap also means your odometer over-counts distance, your fuel consumption per 100 km looks artificially lower than it really is, and at a roadside check you are technically within EU limits - but only just. The same swap in reverse (going from 225/45 R17 back to a smaller winter tire) flips the error the other way: the speedometer reads slow, which means you are going faster than shown.
Compare before you buy. Type both tire sizes into the fields above and check three numbers: circumference difference (keep it under 3%), speedometer error (the percentage your indicated speed will be off) and compatibility status (ACCEPTABLE / BORDERLINE / NOT ACCEPTABLE). If you are within 3%, you are inside the generally accepted tolerance for most inspection regimes. If you are between 3% and 5%, expect a borderline result. Above 5% and you will likely need to recalibrate the instrument cluster or pick a different size.

Summer circumference 1,933 mm vs winter 1,976 mm. On winter tires the speedometer reads 2.2% slow - at indicated 100 you are actually doing 102.2 km/h. Acceptable, but worth noting for highway driving.
Diameter jumps from 724 mm to 776 mm (+7.2%). The speedometer reads 7.2% slow. At indicated 100 km/h you are actually doing 107.2. NOT ACCEPTABLE - exceeds the 5% limit. Instrument cluster recalibration required.
Circumference changes from 1,976 mm to 1,913 mm (-3.2%). Just outside the 3% tolerance - BORDERLINE status. The odometer over-counts by 3.2%, meaning every 100 km registered is actually only 96.8 km driven.
