Vitamin C for a guinea pig, in milligrams and in peppers

Enter your guinea pig's weight and life stage, and the guinea pig vitamin C calculator gives the daily dose in milligrams, then turns it into grams and kitchen measures of sixteen raw vegetables. Pick the one you buy most and it moves to the top of the result, with the produce and pellet portions for the day.

    10 mg per kg
the daily minimum for a healthy adult; vets work with 10 to 25
    30 mg per kg
or more when growing, pregnant, nursing or ill
    8 g
of raw red bell pepper covers the minimum for a 1,000 g adult
    250 g
of romaine would be needed for the same dose

Why guinea pigs need it from the bowl

Most mammals make their own vitamin C. Guinea pigs, like people, cannot, so every milligram has to come from food, every day. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists what happens without it: loss of appetite, dental problems, swollen joints, bleeding under the skin, weakness, a rough coat and lameness. It also gives the number this calculator is built on: at least 10 mg per kilogram of body weight a day, and 30 mg per kilogram for a pregnant female.

The veterinary edition of Merck widens that to 10 to 25 mg/kg for adults and 30 mg/kg or more for animals that are growing, pregnant, lactating or ill. That is why a healthy adult gets a range in the result and every other stage gets a floor.

    Filling in the five boxes

    1. Weight - from a kitchen scale. Weigh in the morning before the vegetables, so the number does not swing with a full stomach.
    2. Unit - grams, ounces or pounds. Most kitchen scales show grams and ounces; the result always prints both grams and pounds.
    3. Life stage - healthy adult, growing, pregnant, nursing, or ill and recovering. Every stage except healthy adult uses 30 mg/kg.
    4. Main vitamin C vegetable - optional. Sixteen raw vegetables with USDA values; the one you pick is highlighted in the table.
    5. Number of guinea pigs - optional, for a group of similar weight. Daily totals are multiplied; the table stays per animal.

Values per 100 g of the raw vegetable from USDA FoodData Central, with the amount that covers 10 mg (a 1,000 g adult) and 30 mg (a 1,000 g pregnant sow). Kitchen measures use the USDA portion weights, so "1 cup chopped" means what USDA weighed, not a heaped handful.

The calculator's own table also has mustard greens, turnip greens, bok choy, collard greens and green leaf lettuce; this one keeps eleven rows to show the spread. Pepper strips are USDA's "10 strips = 52 g", so a strip is about 5.2 g.

Things the vitamin C table gives away

Color matters in peppers. A yellow bell pepper carries 183.5 mg per 100 g, a green one 80.4 mg. The same 10 mg takes one strip of yellow or more than a tablespoon of chopped green.

The lettuce most cages get is nearly empty. Romaine has 4 mg per 100 g and green leaf lettuce 9.2 mg. Merck names romaine and leaf lettuce among the popular greens, and they belong in the bowl, but they cannot carry the vitamin C on their own.

Carrots are a treat, not a source. At 5.9 mg per 100 g a carrot would need 169 g, about 1.3 cups chopped, to cover one adult's minimum, most of a day's 1 to 2 cups of produce. Merck says to offer small amounts of carrot only as a treat.

Two strong sources come with a warning. Parsley and kale are near the top of the list and also among the high-calcium greens Merck says not to give often, because too much calcium may contribute to bladder stones. Rotate them with peppers instead of feeding them daily.

    Four guinea pigs, four doses

    700 g adult
7.0 to 17.5 mg a day. The minimum is 5 g of red bell pepper, about 0.6 tbsp chopped.
    1,000 g adult
10.0 to 25.0 mg, which matches Merck's flat "10 mg per guinea pig" at the low end. 8 g of red pepper or 11 g of broccoli.
    1,200 g pregnant sow
At least 36.0 mg: 28 g of red pepper, about 3.0 tbsp, or 40 g of broccoli.
    500 g growing pup
At least 15.0 mg, more than the 12.5 mg top of the adult range for its weight. 12 g of red pepper.

The rest of the daily ration

Vitamin C is the part owners get wrong, but it sits on top of a simple base. Merck's guidance for pet guinea pigs: unlimited grass hay such as timothy or orchard grass, about 2 tablespoons (1/8 cup) of plain guinea pig pellets a day, and 1 to 2 cups of fresh produce, with fresh water always available. The result shows those portions per animal next to the vitamin C dose.

Food Per guinea pig a day Notes
Grass hay (timothy, orchard)unlimitedalways available; vets say about their body size a day
Fresh produce1 to 2 cupsvitamin C vegetables plus leafy greens such as romaine
Pelletsabout 2 tbsp (1/8 cup)plain guinea pig pellets with vitamin C, timothy-based for adults
Vitamin C10 to 25 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg or moreadult range; growing, pregnant, nursing, ill
    Fruit and carrotsmall amountstreats only
Wateralways availablefresh daily, no supplements in it

The veterinary edition gives a smaller pellet figure of 1 to 2 teaspoons, so treat 2 tablespoons as the upper end for a guinea pig that is not gaining weight.

Pellets for guinea pigs have vitamin C added, but Merck notes that they can lose a substantial amount in just a few months, so buy small bags and check the milling date. Adding vitamin C to the water bowl is not recommended.

Guinea pig vitamin C, asked plainly

How much vitamin C does a guinea pig need daily?
At least 10 mg per kilogram of body weight for a healthy adult, with 10 to 25 mg/kg the usual range, and 30 mg/kg or more when growing, pregnant, nursing or ill. For a 1,000 g adult that is 10.0 to 25.0 mg.
How much bell pepper can a guinea pig have a day?
For vitamin C alone, a 1,000 g adult needs only 8 g of red or 5 g of yellow pepper. Pepper is also part of the 1 to 2 cups of produce, so it can be more than that, as long as the rest of the bowl is greens.
Which bell pepper is best for guinea pigs?
By vitamin C, yellow: 183.5 mg per 100 g against 127.7 mg for red and 80.4 mg for green (USDA). All three are fine; the color only changes how much you need.
How many milligrams of vitamin C can a guinea pig have?
Merck says 10 mg per guinea pig and 30 mg for a pregnant female are safe to give, and puts the adult range up to 25 mg/kg. Larger doses or tablets are a question for your veterinarian, especially for an ill animal.
Are vitamin C drops in the water a good idea?
Merck advises against it. Vitamin C in water requires frequent changing and can give the water an unappealing flavor. Vegetables and fresh pellets are the recommended route.
