This calculator adds them all up and shows you the effective cost per kilowatt-hour - the number that matters when you compare suppliers or decide whether solar panels make sense.
How to calculate your electricity bill - step by step
- Monthly usage (kWh) - read your meter or check your last bill. US average household: 886 kWh/month. A 1-bedroom apartment typically uses 400-600 kWh, a 3-bedroom house 800-1,200 kWh.
- Energy rate ($/kWh) - the per-kWh charge for electricity itself. US national average: $0.14/kWh. California and New York run $0.20-0.30. Texas and the Southeast: $0.10-0.13.
- Distribution charge ($/kWh) - the variable delivery fee your utility charges per kWh. Typically $0.03-0.08/kWh. Some utilities bundle this into the energy rate - if so, enter 0.
- Fixed monthly charges ($) - the flat fees that appear regardless of usage: customer charge, meter fee, service charge. Usually $5-20/month combined.
