A must reading of 22 Brix on the refractometer tells you exactly how much sugar the yeast has to work with. The higher the number, the more potential alcohol - but only if the yeast can handle it. This calculator converts your 22 Brix reading into expected ABV, checks attenuation, estimates residual sugar and applies the Terrill correction so your post-fermentation refractometer reading is accurate too.

A refractometer lies after fermentation - but with the right formula, you can catch the lie
Once alcohol forms in your must, a refractometer no longer reads true sugar. The ethanol bends light differently than water, pushing the Brix reading upward. The Terrill correction formula accounts for this shift and recovers the real final gravity. This calculator accepts either Brix (refractometer) or SG (hydrometer) and returns ABV, apparent attenuation, residual sugar, sweetness classification and calories per glass.
How to measure wine ABV - step by step
- Take an initial reading - measure the must before adding yeast. Use a refractometer (Brix) or hydrometer (SG). Record the number.
- Ferment the wine - let fermentation run its course. Primary fermentation typically takes 1-2 weeks; full fermentation may take 4-8 weeks.
- Take a final reading - measure the wine after fermentation stops (no more bubbling for 2-3 days). Use the same type of instrument if possible.
- Select your unit - choose Brix or SG in the calculator. If you used a refractometer, the Terrill correction is applied automatically.
- Read your results - ABV, attenuation, residual sugar, sweetness level and calories per glass.
