    Beer color comes from malt. Every grain in your recipe contributes color units proportional to its weight and its EBC rating. The Morey formula converts those combined color units (MCU) into SRM and EBC values - giving you a reliable prediction of how pale, amber or dark your finished beer will look in the glass.     How to calculate beer color - step by step

    1. Post-boil volume - enter the amount of wort after the boil, in liters. Typical home batch: 20-25 L.
    2. Number of malts - select how many distinct malt types are in your grain bill (1-6).
    3. Malt weight (kg) - enter the weight of each malt. Base malt is usually 70-90% of the total.
    4. Malt color (EBC) - find the EBC value on the malt data sheet or packaging.
    5. Read the result - the calculator shows EBC, SRM, MCU, a color swatch and style classification.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    What is the difference between EBC and SRM?
    Both scales measure beer color. SRM (Standard Reference Method) is the American standard. EBC (European Brewery Convention) is the European standard. The conversion is simple: EBC = SRM x 1.97. A 5 SRM beer equals roughly 10 EBC. European recipes and malt specifications almost always use EBC.
    What is MCU and how does Morey formula improve on it?
    MCU (Malt Color Units) is a simple linear calculation: sum of (weight x color) / volume for each malt. It works well for pale beers but overestimates color for dark beers. The Morey formula (SRM = 1.4922 x MCU0.6859) applies a power curve that better models how color compounds actually behave, giving accurate results up to about 50 SRM (100 EBC).
    How accurate is this color prediction?
    The Morey formula is accurate within 1-2 SRM for beers under 50 SRM. Factors that can shift real-world color include mashing temperature, boil duration (longer boils darken wort), yeast strain, water chemistry and oxidation. Treat the result as a close estimate rather than an exact measurement.
    What is Lovibond and how does it relate to EBC?
    Lovibond (degrees Lovibond) is an older color measurement system still used by some American maltsters. The conversion is Lovibond = (EBC + 0.46) / 1.97. In practice, Lovibond is nearly identical to SRM for values above 8. This calculator converts EBC to Lovibond internally for the MCU calculation.
    Can I use this for extract brewing?
    Yes, but with a caveat. Malt extract (LME/DME) already has color built in. Use the EBC rating printed on the extract container and treat it as a single malt input. Light LME is typically 5-8 EBC, amber LME is 20-30 EBC, and dark LME is 60-80 EBC. The weight should be the dry-equivalent weight of the extract.
    Why does the same recipe look different in different glasses?
    Beer color perception depends on glass shape, thickness and lighting. A thin-walled glass shows lighter color than a thick pint glass. Color also changes with clarity - hazy beer appears lighter because suspended particles scatter light. The EBC/SRM value is measured in a standardized lab cuvette at specific light wavelength (430 nm), eliminating these variables.
