    How to use - step by step

    1. Area length and width - measure the driveway, patio or walkway in feet. For irregular shapes, split into rectangles and calculate each separately.
    2. Stone length and width - enter the paver dimensions in inches. Common: 4 x 8 (Holland), 6 x 6, 6 x 9, 8 x 8.

    Four things most paver estimates miss

    1. The base weighs more than the pavers. An 8-inch aggregate base for a 240 sq ft driveway is about 8 tons. The pavers on top weigh 2-3 tons. Most online calculators only count stones and ignore the 70% of material that goes underneath.
    2. Herringbone wastes 15%, not 10%. Every edge cut in a herringbone pattern produces an unusable triangle. A straight running bond lets you reuse offcuts on the opposite edge. Pattern choice alone can mean 50+ extra stones on a mid-size driveway.
    3. Polymeric sand is not regular sand. Bedding sand goes under the pavers. Polymeric sand fills the joints and hardens when wet. They are different products with different costs. Budget $25-40 per 50 lb bag of polymeric sand, one bag per ~30-50 sq ft.
    4. Delivery fees add up fast. Aggregate and pavers ship by the truckload. A half-load delivery costs almost as much as a full load. Ordering enough for one trip vs two can save $100-300 in delivery charges.

    How deep should the base be under pavers?
    For walkways and patios: 6 inches of compacted aggregate + 1 inch of bedding sand. For driveways: 8-10 inches of aggregate + 1.5 inches of sand. Clay soil or cold climates may need 12+ inches to prevent frost heave. The calculator uses 8-inch aggregate and 1.5-inch sand as standard.
    How many pavers per square foot?

    Can I pave over an existing concrete slab?
    Yes, if the concrete is in good condition with no major cracks or heaving. Lay 1 inch of bedding sand directly on the slab and set pavers on top. No aggregate base needed - the concrete provides it. This saves significant cost and labor but you lose 3-4 inches of height (sand + pavers).
    What is the best pattern for a driveway?
    Herringbone (90 degrees) is the strongest pattern for vehicular traffic - the interlocking angles resist shifting under load. Running bond is the easiest to install and wastes the least material. Basketweave works for patios but is not recommended for driveways because the grid pattern can shift. For pure strength: herringbone. For DIY simplicity: running bond.
    Do I need edge restraints?
