What does a 240 sq ft driveway actually weigh?
More than most people expect. A standard 20 x 12 ft single-car driveway with 4 x 8 in concrete pavers needs 1,188 stones. Under those stones sit 8 inches of crushed aggregate and 1.5 inches of bedding sand - roughly 9.3 tons of material that most homeowners forget to budget for. The pavers themselves weigh another 2-3 tons on top. This calculator handles all three numbers: stone count, aggregate tonnage and sand tonnage. Add prices and it shows the full project cost.
How to use - step by step
- Area length and width - measure the driveway, patio or walkway in feet. For irregular shapes, split into rectangles and calculate each separately.
- Stone length and width - enter the paver dimensions in inches. Common: 4 x 8 (Holland), 6 x 6, 6 x 9, 8 x 8.
- Stone thickness - 2 3/8 in for walkways and patios. 3 1/8 in for residential driveways. 4 in for heavy truck traffic or fire lanes.
- Waste allowance - 10% for running bond or stack bond. 15% for herringbone. 20% for circular patterns.
- Stones per pallet (optional) - check the supplier listing. Typical: 400-600 per pallet for 4 x 8 in pavers.
