    What is the difference between HP, PS and kW?
    kW (kilowatt) is the SI unit of power, used officially in the EU. HP (horsepower) was invented by James Watt in 1782 to sell steam engines. PS (Pferdestärke) is the metric version of HP used in Germany and Japan. In practice, 1 HP (metric) = 0.7355 kW and PS is virtually identical to metric HP (difference: 1.4%).
    Is metric HP the same as imperial HP?
    No. 1 metric HP = 0.7355 kW, while 1 imperial HP = 0.7457 kW. The difference is about 1.4%. A car rated at 300 metric HP is 296 imperial HP. US manufacturers typically quote imperial HP; European and Asian brands use metric HP or PS.
    Why do registration documents use kW instead of HP?
    EU regulation 80/1269/EEC requires engine power to be stated in kilowatts because kW is the SI standard. HP or PS may appear alongside kW but cannot replace it. Insurance and tax authorities in most European countries calculate premiums from the kW figure.
    How much HP does a typical car have?

    The conversion is the same (1 kW = 1.36 HP), but EVs deliver 100% torque from 0 rpm. A 150 kW (204 HP) EV often feels faster than a 204 HP combustion car because there is no turbo lag and no need to rev up. Real-world acceleration depends on how the motor controller manages power delivery.
