50 HP - How Many Kilowatts Is That?
Three units, one engine. Convert between kilowatts (kW), horsepower (HP) and metric horsepower (PS) instantly. Enter any value - get all three formats plus a power-to-weight ratio if you add the vehicle mass.
50 HP is a number you see on car listings, insurance forms and spec sheets. But EU registration documents use kilowatts. This calculator converts 50 horsepower to kW instantly - and shows the PS equivalent too. One click, three units, no guesswork.

Three units, one engine - kW, HP and PS side by side
A car listed at 110 kW in Germany, 150 HP in the US and 152 PS in Japan is the same car. The confusion exists because three different power units survived a century of automotive history. This calculator converts between all three instantly - enter one value, read the other two.
How to convert engine power - step by step
- Conversion direction - choose HP to kW or kW to HP. HP (horsepower) is the colloquial unit; kW is the SI unit printed on EU registration documents.
- Enter the power value - type the number from the vehicle spec sheet, listing or registration card. Typical range: 50-500 for passenger cars.
- Read the results - the calculator returns the converted value, the formula used, a step-by-step breakdown, and all three units (HP, kW, PS) side by side for quick comparison.
Before and after: what the same engine looks like in different units
Before conversion
US listing: "300 HP V6"
German listing: "221 kW Turbodiesel"
Japanese listing: "304 PS VTEC"
Three numbers, three units - are these the same engine?
After conversion
300 HP = 220.65 kW = 304.16 PS
221 kW = 300.48 HP = 304.48 PS
304 PS = 299.89 HP = 223.62 kW
Yes - within rounding, all three describe the same power output.

Power reference table - real cars
| HP | kW | PS | Example vehicles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75 | 55 | 76 | Dacia Sandero 1.0, Fiat 500 1.2 |
| 110 | 81 | 112 | VW Polo 1.0 TSI, Ford Fiesta 1.0 |
| 150 | 110 | 152 | VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Toyota Corolla 2.0 |
| 200 | 147 | 203 | BMW 320i, Mazda 6 2.5, Audi A3 2.0 TFSI |
| 300 | 221 | 304 | Audi A4 45 TFSI, BMW 330i, Mustang EcoBoost |
| 500 | 368 | 507 | BMW M3, Mustang GT, Mercedes AMG C63 |
Practical examples
Result: 110 kW = 149.56 HP - a solid family car, similar to a Golf 1.5 TSI.
Result: 310 imperial HP = 231.17 kW. Close enough - the 1 kW gap is rounding.
Result: 228 PS = 224.87 HP = 165.43 kW. PS and metric HP differ by about 1.4%.
Result: 211 kW = 286.88 HP - but EV torque delivery makes it feel faster than 287 HP in a combustion car.
Result: 55 kW = 74.78 HP = 75.83 PS - enough for daily city commute.
