    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    What is the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed?
    Instantaneous speed is what your speedometer shows at a single moment. Average speed divides the total distance by the total time, including stops, slow sections and highway stretches. A trip with instantaneous speeds between 0 and 130 km/h can have an average speed of 75 km/h.
    Should I include stops when calculating average speed?
    It depends what you need. Overall average (total distance / total elapsed time) is useful for trip planning. Moving average (distance / driving time only) tells you how efficient your driving was. GPS apps like Google Maps typically show moving average.
    How do I convert km/h to mph?
    Multiply by 0.62137. Quick mental shortcut: divide by 1.6. So 100 km/h is roughly 62 mph, and 60 mph is roughly 97 km/h. The calculator does this conversion automatically.
    How long does it take to drive 100 miles at 65 mph?
    Time = 100 / 65 = 1.538 hours = 1 hour 32 minutes 18 seconds. In practice, add 10-15% for traffic, fuel stops and speed variations. Budget about 1 hour 45 minutes.
    Why is my GPS average speed lower than my cruising speed?
    Every traffic light, roundabout, lane merge, and slowdown drags the average down. Cruising at 120 km/h with three 2-minute red lights on a 30 km stretch drops the average to about 100 km/h. City sections can cut your overall average by 30-40% compared to your highway cruise speed.
    Can I use this for running and cycling too?
    Yes. The formula v = s / t works for any mode of transport. Enter your distance in km or miles and time in minutes. A 5 km run in 25 minutes gives 12 km/h (7.46 mph) = 5:00 min/km pace. A 40 km bike ride in 1h 30min gives 26.67 km/h (16.57 mph).
