Enter one-way distance, fuel consumption, price and work days. The calculator doubles the distance for the round trip and shows daily, monthly and annual commute cost. Compare driving vs transit, split costs with carpooling.
Commute cost: sharing with two
Enter one-way distance, fuel consumption, price and work days. The calculator doubles the distance for the round trip and shows daily, monthly and annual commute cost. Compare driving vs transit, split costs with carpooling.
The sharing with two setting works from different assumptions than the ones next to it. Fuel cost does not change with the number of people in the car, so each extra passenger divides the bill rather than adding to it. This page opens the calculator with sharing with two already selected, so only the remaining fields are left to fill in. Swap in your own figures and the arithmetic is rebuilt from them.

Four inputs, full commute cost breakdown
Enter one-way distance in km, fuel consumption in L/100 km, fuel price per liter and number of work days per month. The calculator doubles the distance for the round trip and returns daily, monthly and annual commute cost. Optionally add a monthly transit pass price to see whether driving or public transport saves you more. Select 2-4 people to calculate carpooling splits.
Quick start example:
Distance 25 km one way, consumption 7.5 L/100 km, fuel $1.60/L, 22 work days = $6.00/day, $132.00/month, $1,584/year.
Commute cost scenarios
Eight scenarios from a short suburban drive to a long highway commute. All assume 22 work days and $1.60/L gasoline.
| Scenario | One-way | L/100km | Daily | Monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short suburban | 10 km | 8.0 | $2.56 | $56.32 | $676 |
| Average commute | 25 km | 7.5 | $6.00 | $132.00 | $1,584 |
| Long highway | 50 km | 6.5 | $10.40 | $228.80 | $2,746 |
| Extreme commute | 80 km | 6.0 | $15.36 | $337.92 | $4,055 |
| SUV city traffic | 15 km | 12.0 | $5.76 | $126.72 | $1,521 |
| Diesel sedan | 35 km | 5.5 | $6.16 | $135.52 | $1,626 |
Carpooling savings
Same 25 km commute at 7.5 L/100 km and $1.60/L. Splitting the cost changes the math.
| People in car | Cost per person/day | Per person/month | Annual saving vs solo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (solo) | $6.00 | $132.00 | - |
| 2 people | $3.00 | $66.00 | $792 |
| 3 people | $2.00 | $44.00 | $1,056 |
| 4 people | $1.50 | $33.00 | $1,188 |
The formula
Daily commute cost:
daily = distance * 2 * (consumption / 100) * fuel_price
distance = one-way km | consumption = L/100km | fuel_price = per liter
Monthly = daily * work_days | Annual = monthly * 12 | Per person = total / people
