How long does it actually take to sober up after four beers? And while we are asking uncomfortable questions - what is your VO2max, and how does it compare to other people your age?
These are not trick questions. They have precise, calculable answers. Your liver eliminates alcohol at 0.15 per mille per hour - give or take 0.05, depending on genetics and liver health. Your VO2max peaked somewhere around age 25 and has been declining roughly 1% per year ever since, unless you have been doing something about it. Both numbers are biological constants that no amount of coffee, wishful thinking or morning-after remedies can change.

Your VO2max is a single number that summarizes your cardiovascular fitness
VO2max measures the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per minute per kilogram. It is the gold standard of aerobic fitness. Lab testing with a mask and gas analyzer costs $150-400. Or you can run for 12 minutes and do the math yourself.
The Cooper test formula is straightforward: VO2max = (distance in meters - 504.9) / 44.73. A 30-year-old man who covers 2,400 meters in 12 minutes gets a VO2max of 42.3 ml/kg/min. That puts him in the "Good" category for his age group - roughly the 50th-75th percentile.

For women, subtract about 8-10 from each value. A 35-year-old woman with a VO2max of 38 is in the "Good" range, while the same number for a 35-year-old man is just average.
The decline is real. Without training, VO2max drops about 1% per year after 25. A 50-year-old who was "Good" at 25 (VO2max of 48) will be at roughly 36 without intervention - barely "Average." But here is what the data also shows: structured training can improve VO2max by 15-20% at any age. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that sedentary 60-70 year olds improved by 17% after six months of endurance work.

Two beers, 80 kg, male. How drunk is that?
The Widmark formula, published in 1932 by Swedish chemist Erik Widmark, is still the standard for forensic BAC estimation. It works like this:
BAC = grams of pure alcohol / (body weight x distribution factor) - elimination rate x hours
The distribution factor (r) is 0.68 for men and 0.55 for women. Two standard beers (500 ml each, 5% ABV) contain 39.5 grams of pure ethanol. For an 80 kg man:
Peak BAC = 39.5 / (80 x 0.68) = 0.73 per mille (0.073% BAC)
That is below the US legal limit of 0.08% but above the 0.05% limit used in most of Europe and Australia. Time to sober: roughly 4 hours 50 minutes.

The table makes one thing painfully clear: a lighter woman reaches a higher BAC from fewer drinks. One strong beer puts a 55 kg woman at 0.91 per mille - above every driving limit in the world.

You cannot speed up sobering. You can only plan around it.
Coffee does not help. Cold showers do not help. Exercise, energy drinks, activated charcoal - none of it. The liver metabolizes alcohol via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) at a rate governed by enzyme kinetics. That rate is 0.10-0.20 per mille per hour, averaging 0.15. It is fixed.
The practical consequence is simple arithmetic. If your BAC is 1.0 per mille at midnight, you will be at 0.0 per mille at roughly 6:40 AM - assuming the average elimination rate. Below the 0.05% driving limit (0.5 per mille) at around 3:20 AM. Below the stricter 0.02% limit (0.2 per mille) at about 5:20 AM.
But the range matters. A slow metabolizer (0.10/h) at 1.0 per mille needs 10 hours to reach zero. A fast metabolizer (0.20/h) needs only 5. You do not know which one you are. That is why the safest approach is to assume the slow end and add a buffer.
The morning-after trap is real. Studies of DUI arrests show a significant cluster between 6-10 AM - people who drank the previous evening, slept what they thought was "long enough," and drove to work still above the legal limit. A bottle of wine at dinner (BAC ~1.5-2.0 for a smaller person) takes 10-13 hours to fully clear. If you finish at 11 PM, you might not be at zero until noon the next day.
