The 50th percentile is not a target. It is the middle of a bell curve, not a gold standard. A child who has tracked at the 15th percentile since birth is growing consistently and well. A child who drops from the 60th to the 15th in four months needs a pediatrician, even though the 15th percentile is technically "normal."
And 140 bpm? That magic number pregnant women have heard for decades? It came from 1985 ACOG guidelines that were revised years ago. The current recommendation is individualized - based on age, trimester and pre-pregnancy fitness. A 25-year-old former runner in the first trimester can safely exceed 140. A 40-year-old beginner in the third trimester should stay well below it.
Numbers without context mislead. These three calculators provide the context.
The child weighs 24.5 kg. Is that a problem?
A 7-year-old boy at 24.5 kg. Good or bad? Impossible to say without knowing where that weight falls relative to every other 7-year-old boy.
The Child Weight Percentile Calculator returns the 53rd percentile - almost exactly the median. The WHO reference table for a 7.5-year-old boy shows:

At 24.5 kg, this boy sits 0.4 kg above the median. Perfectly unremarkable - which is exactly what you want to hear.
But suppose the same child weighed 24.5 kg a year ago at age 6.5 and still weighs 24.5 kg now. The percentile would have dropped from roughly the 70th to the 53rd. The absolute weight is fine. The trajectory is not. That is why pediatricians plot weight over time, not as isolated snapshots.
The calculator uses five bands rather than the four you see in BMI charts: significantly below normal (below 3rd), below average but normal (3rd-15th), normal (15th-85th), above normal (85th-97th) and significantly above normal (above 97th). The extra granularity at the lower end matters because the difference between the 2nd and the 14th percentile is clinically significant even though both are "below average."
140 bpm is not the line. Your body has its own line.
In 1985, ACOG published exercise guidelines for pregnant women that included a hard ceiling: 140 bpm. Simple. Memorable. Wrong for most women.
The problem with a single number is that it ignores everything that makes heart rate personal. A 25-year-old with a max heart rate of 195 can reach 140 bpm at a brisk walk. A 40-year-old with a max of 180 hits 140 during a light jog. Same number, completely different effort levels.
The Pregnancy Heart Rate Calculator computes a personalized range. For a 30-year-old in the 2nd trimester with a resting heart rate of 78 bpm and moderate pre-pregnancy fitness:
- Safe exercise range: 95-124 bpm (50-65% of HRmax)
- Talk test threshold: 114 bpm
- Absolute limit: 140 bpm
Notice that the "safe range" tops out at 124, well below the old 140 rule. The 140 becomes the never-exceed ceiling, not the normal working zone. For the same woman in the 1st trimester, the ceiling is higher (145 bpm). In the 3rd trimester, it drops to 135.
The talk test deserves more attention than it gets. If you can speak in short sentences while exercising, you are in the safe zone. If you can only gasp single words, you are too high regardless of what the number on your watch says. It is the most reliable low-tech intensity monitor available.

32 breaths per minute while running. Normal or not?
Breathing rate is the metric almost nobody tracks and almost everybody should. Runners obsess over pace, heart rate and cadence but rarely count breaths. Yet breathing rate is the fastest indicator that you have crossed the ventilatory threshold - the point where your body produces more CO2 than it can exhale, and fatigue accelerates sharply.
The Breathing Rate Calculator says 32 breaths/min during moderate running falls squarely in the normal zone (expected: 25-45). The estimated minute ventilation is 48 L/min - your lungs are moving 48 liters of air every minute. At rest, that number is about 6-8 L/min. At maximal effort, elite athletes push past 150.
What makes this calculator different from a simple "is my breathing normal" chart is that it adjusts for the activity. Running at 32 breaths/min is fine. Sitting at 32 breaths/min is tachypnea and warrants medical attention. Walking at 32 breaths/min means you are working harder than you think.

The technique recommendations change by activity. Runners should aim for a 2:2 step-breath rhythm (inhale for 2 steps, exhale for 2). Swimmers should exhale continuously underwater. Weight lifters should exhale during the lift, never hold breath during regular sets. These patterns come from exercise physiology, not opinion.
Three calculators, one principle
A child's weight percentile, a pregnant woman's heart rate ceiling and a runner's breathing zone all share the same underlying logic: raw numbers mean nothing without a reference frame. The 53rd percentile is healthy because it is consistent. 124 bpm is safe because it accounts for age, trimester and fitness. 32 breaths/min is normal because it matches the activity.
The alternative to calculators is guesswork. And guesswork in health has a cost.
