A Normal BMI Can Hide Dangerous Fat and Your Bank Adds 3% to Every Exchange

Visceral fat hides behind a normal BMI, banks hide fees in exchange rates, and crypto prices move while you sleep. Three calculators that show what the numbers really mean.

BMI is the number everyone knows and nobody trusts. A 78-kilogram man at 178 cm gets a reassuring 24.6 - textbook normal. But wrap a tape measure around his waist and the story changes. If that waist reads 98 cm, his WHR lands at 0.94 (elevated by WHO standards), his WHtR crosses the 0.50 threshold into visceral overweight, and his Visceral Fat Rating sits at the upper boundary of normal. Same weight, same height, completely different risk profile.

Visceral fat is the kind you cannot pinch. It packs around the liver, pancreas and intestines, and unlike the subcutaneous layer under your skin, it is metabolically active. It secretes inflammatory molecules - interleukin-6, TNF-alpha, resistin - that drive insulin resistance even when the scale looks fine. A Lancet meta-analysis of 2.5 million adults found that every 10 cm increase in waist circumference raised all-cause mortality by 11%, independently of BMI.

The medical term for this is TOFI - Thin Outside, Fat Inside. Studies estimate 10-15% of normal-weight adults carry excess visceral fat without knowing it.

Three numbers that BMI misses

The Visceral Fat Calculator produces three metrics from five measurements (waist, hips, height, age, sex):

MetricWhat it measuresNormal range
VF RatingVisceral fat volume (1-59 scale, correlated with DEXA)1-9
WHRWaist-to-hip ratio (fat distribution)M < 0.90, F < 0.80
WHtRWaist-to-height ratio (metabolic risk predictor)< 0.50

WHtR is the newest of the three and possibly the most useful. A 2010 BMC Medicine meta-analysis of 300,000 adults concluded that WHtR outperformed both BMI and waist circumference alone as a predictor of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular events. The rule is simple: keep your waist below half your height.

A rating of 9 sits right at the boundary. One more point and the classification shifts from Normal to Elevated. The calculator shows a reduction target: waist below 94 cm for men, below 80 cm for women. Each centimetre of waist reduction corresponds to roughly one kilogram of fat lost - and visceral fat is the first depot the body taps during a caloric deficit.

The exchange rate your bank does not show you

Banks quote exchange rates like they are doing you a favour. They are not. Every bank and exchange office adds a spread - the gap between their buy and sell rates - and that spread is where they make money. On a popular pair like EUR/USD, a typical bank spread runs 2-3%. Airport exchanges push it to 5-10%.

Here is what that looks like on a real conversion.

Mid-market (interbank)1.14322,858 USD$0
Bank (2.5% spread)1.11472,787 USD$71
Airport exchange (7%)1.06322,658 USD$200
Fintech (Wise, 0.4%)1.13862,847 USD$11

The Currency Converter shows the mid-market rate - the fairest rate available, the one banks use between themselves. Comparing your bank's quote against this number tells you exactly how much the spread costs you. On 2,500 EUR, the difference between a bank and a fintech card is $60. Over a year of business invoices or regular transfers, that adds up to hundreds.

The converter tracks ten currencies (EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, JPY, CAD, AUD, NOK, SEK, DKK) and shows day-over-day change. A green arrow means the source currency strengthened - you get more target currency today. Red means the opposite. Typical daily moves on major pairs are 0.05-0.5%, which on large sums can mean tens of dollars either way.

$1,000 buys 0.016 Bitcoin and that number changes every second

Crypto pricing is a different world. There is no central bank, no official rate, no closing bell. Bitcoin trades 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across 600+ exchanges worldwide. The price you see is a volume-weighted average from CoinGecko, updated every 2 minutes.

At the time of writing, $1,000 buys roughly 0.01594 BTC - about 1.6 million satoshi (the smallest unit of Bitcoin, where 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshi). That same $1,000 would buy 0.57 ETH, 1.76 BNB, 914 XRP or 5,860 ADA.

Daily swings of 3-10% are normal. During major market events, 20-30% moves happen within hours. The Bitcoin & Crypto Calculator lets you convert in both directions - dollars to crypto (buying) and crypto to dollars (selling) - with live prices rather than yesterday's close.

One thing the calculator cannot tell you: what happens next. Crypto is a speculative asset with no guaranteed floor. Bitcoin has dropped over 80% from its peak multiple times in its history. The price you see is the price right now - nothing more, nothing less.

The common thread

Three calculators, three different domains, one shared principle: the number you see first is rarely the full picture. BMI hides visceral fat. Bank rates hide the spread. Spot prices hide exchange fees and volatility. The tools below do not predict the future, but they show the gap between what you think the number means and what it actually costs you.
