What pace runs a 1:40 half marathon?
Mile-by-mile splits for any half marathon goal from 56 minutes to 4 hours: even pace, a negative split or a slower first 5K, every mile, kilometer or 5K, with the gap to even pace at each marker.
The calculator below is set to a goal of 1:40 for the 13.1 miles, run at an even pace with a split at every mile marker. Press Calculate for the pace per mile and per km, the time at each mile sign and at halfway. Switch to a negative split or a slower first 5K, or to splits every kilometer or every 5K, and the table follows.

Half marathon splits for any goal time
Should a 1:50 runner pass halfway in 55:00 or in 55:33? Both finish in 1:50:00; the second plan runs the opening half 10 s per mile slower and comes home 1:06 faster over the second half. This calculator turns a goal time into the split for every mile, every kilometer or every 5K, for even pace, a negative split or a slower first 5K, and shows how far ahead of or behind even pace you are at each marker.
Three boxes for the time, two choices for the plan
- Hours, minutes, seconds - your goal finishing time, from 56 minutes to 4 hours. You can also leave hours empty and type the whole goal in minutes, such as 110 for 1:50:00.
- Race plan - even pace, a negative split (the second half faster) or a slower first 5K followed by an even pace to the finish.
- Pace difference and its unit - only for the last two plans: how many seconds per mile or per kilometer slower the easier part is. A typical half marathon difference is 5-15 s per mile, or 3-10 s per km; fractions such as 2.5 are fine.
- Splits every - every mile for US races and most watches set to miles, every kilometer for races marked in km, every 5K for a short list to memorize.
- Read the splits - the table gives the pace of each segment, your time at the marker, the even-pace time and how many seconds you are ahead (-) or behind (+).

Even pace for nine goal times
The checkpoints most races have: the 5K and 10K timing mats and halfway. Every value is the calculator's output for even pace.

One goal of 1:50:00, three ways to run it
Same finish time, different checkpoints. The negative split is the plan many coaches suggest for a half; the slower first 5K suits crowded starts where the first mile is lost anyway.
| Plan | Mile 3 | Halfway | Mile 10 | Second half |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Even, 8:23 per mile | 25:10 | 55:00 | 1:23:55 | 55:00 |
| Negative split, 10 s per mile | 25:25 | 55:33 | 1:24:10 | 54:27 |
| First 5K slower, 15 s per mile | 25:45 | 55:23 | 1:24:06 | 54:37 |
