Women's Decathlon calculator: points for all ten events

Score a decathlon, heptathlon or indoor pentathlon event by event with the official formulas, see both days, and find the 1500m or 800m time a points goal needs.

This page opens the calculator on the women's decathlon: 100m, discus, pole vault, javelin and 400m on day one; 100m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1500m on day two, scored with the official combined events formulas and rounded down to whole points. It is filled in with example marks: 12.40, 38.00 m, 3.60 m, 45.00 m, 58.50, 14.60, 5.80 m, 12.50 m, 1.70 m and 5:05.00, which add up to 7,845 points (3,818 on day one, 4,027 on day two). Replace them with your own marks, in meters or in feet and inches, or leave the last event empty and set a points goal to see the mark it needs.

Decathlon, heptathlon and pentathlon points, event by event

Ten marks go in, one score comes out: 10.62, 8.07, 16.57, 2.00, 47.74, 13.80, 45.51, 5.00, 68.53 and 4:35.13 make 8,902 points, the winning score sheet printed in the official combined events tables. This decathlon calculator scores the men's and women's decathlon, the women's heptathlon, the men's indoor heptathlon and the women's indoor pentathlon with the World Athletics formulas. It keeps a running total, splits the two days, accepts jumps and throws in feet and inches, and works out the mark you need in the last event for a points goal.

Quick start. Pick Women's heptathlon and type six marks: 13.05, 1.67, 12.87, 22.92, 6.45 and 48.74, leaving the 800m empty. Add a goal of 6500. The calculator shows 5,568 points after six events and says the 800m needs 2:12.28 or faster.

    Filling in a score sheet

    1. Combined event - men's decathlon, women's heptathlon, women's decathlon, men's indoor heptathlon or women's indoor pentathlon. Only the events of that competition appear, grouped into races, jumps and throws; the result table lists them in the order the rules run them.
    2. Timing - fully automatic, or hand-held stopwatch. Hand times are rounded up to the tenth and get 0.24 s added below 400m and 0.14 s at 400m before scoring.
    3. Points goal - optional, a whole number such as 7000. Leave exactly one event empty and the result gives the mark that event needs.
    4. Race times - seconds with hundredths for sprints and hurdles (11.25), min:sec for the 800m, 1000m and 1500m (4:35.13).
    5. Jumps and throws - meters (6.45) or feet and inches (21-02.25, 21' 2.25"). Any event can stay empty; the total covers the events entered so far. Then read the total, the two days, the strongest and weakest event and the running table.

Eight score sheets, from championship podiums to a club meet

Sheet 1: the men's decathlon winner printed in the tables

    Situation: 10.62 / 8.07 / 16.57 / 2.00 / 47.74 / 13.80 / 45.51 / 5.00 / 68.53 / 4:35.13
Result: 8,902 points, 4,637 on day one and 4,265 on day two. Every event score matches the printed sheet, from 947 in the 100m to 711 in the 1500m.
The same page prints second place at 8,815 and third at 8,603; both come out to the point.

Sheet 2: the American on the heptathlon podium

    Situation: 13.05 / 1.67 / 12.87 / 22.92 / 6.45 / 48.74 / 2:14.24, Sheila Burrell (USA) on the printed women's sheet.
Result: 6,472 points. Her 1117 in the hurdles and 1087 in the 200m carried a high jump worth 818.
The winner on that sheet scored 6,694 and second place 6,539.

Sheet 3: the 800m she would have needed for 6,500

Situation: the first six marks of sheet 2, the 800m empty, goal 6500.
Result: 5,568 after six events, 932 more needed, which takes 2:12.28 or faster. Her actual 2:14.24 scored 904.

Sheet 4: a club decathlete in feet and inches

    Situation: 11.20 / 21-08 / 41-00 / 6-01 / 51.50 / 15.80 / 125-00 / 13-09.25 / 165-00 / 4:45.00
    Result: 6,884 points. The conversions land at 6.60 m, 12.49 m, 1.85 m, 38.10 m, 4.19 m and 50.29 m; the strongest event is the 100m (817), the weakest the javelin (593).
41-00 in the shot put is 12.4968 m and is scored as 12.49 m: one point less than a metric 12.50.

Sheet 5: what the 1500m needs for 7,000

Situation: the same athlete in meters after nine events, goal 7000.
Result: 6,232 points, so the 1500m has to bring 768: 4:26.53 or faster, more than 18 seconds quicker than 4:45.00.

Sheet 6: a heptathlon timed by hand

    Situation: 14.60 / 1.65 / 11.50 / 25.80 / 5.70 / 40.00 / 2:25.00, once with automatic timing, once with a stopwatch.
Result: 5,316 automatic, 5,263 by hand. The hurdles become 14.84 s and the 200m 26.04 s; the 800m has no correction.

    Sheet 7: the women's decathlon

    Situation: 12.40 / 38.00 / 3.60 / 45.00 / 58.50 / 14.60 / 5.80 / 12.50 / 1.70 / 5:05.00
Result: 7,845 points, 3,818 on day one and 4,027 on day two. The discus is the weakest event at 615.

    Sheet 8: the indoor events

    Situation: men's indoor heptathlon 7.05 / 7.20 / 14.00 / 2.00 / 8.10 / 4.90 / 2:45.10, women's indoor pentathlon 8.45 / 1.80 / 13.00 / 6.20 / 2:15.40
Result: 5,913 and 4,532 points. The pentathlon runs in one day, so there is no day split.

Men's decathlon: the mark each points level takes

The weakest mark that still scores the points in each column, worked from the formulas. A steady 800 per event is an 8,000-point decathlon; 700 per event is 7,000.

The formulas and the rules behind every total

Each event has three constants, a, b and c, published in the IAAF Scoring Tables for Combined Events. Races use a(b - T)c with the time in seconds, jumps a(M - b)c with the mark in centimeters, and throws a(D - b)c with the distance in meters. The result is always rounded down: 123.999 is 123. For the men's 100m, a = 25.4347, b = 18.00 and c = 1.81, so 10.40 seconds scores 999 and a hand-timed 10.4 scores 942, the two worked examples printed in the tables.

These are not the World Athletics scoring tables used to compare single-event marks. The combined events tables are their own system, built so that top decathletes land near the same totals as before, and so that a specialist in one event cannot make up for weak performances in the others. The order of events is fixed by the rules: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m on the first day of the men's decathlon, then 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. The rules also ask for at least 30 minutes between events for each athlete and, where possible, at least 10 hours between the two days.

    Multi-event scoring, asked and answered

    How are decathlon points calculated?
Each of the ten marks goes through its own formula, the points are rounded down to whole numbers and added. There are no bonus points for winning an event or for the total. The table in the result shows each score and the running sum.
Can I enter high school marks in feet?
Yes, for jumps and throws: 21-08, 21' 8" or 21 ft 8 in. They are converted at 2.54 cm per inch and rounded down to the centimeter, so a mark can lose a point against its metric twin, as 41-00 in the shot put does. The calculator does not adjust for implement weights or hurdle heights.
Why does a hand time cost points?
The tables put hand times on the automatic scale by adding 0.24 s below 400m and 0.14 s at 400m, after rounding up to the tenth. In sheet 6 that costs 53 points over two races. There is no correction above 400m.
What 1500m do I need for a points total?
Fill in the nine marks, leave the 1500m empty and enter the goal. Sheet 5 shows the answer for 7,000: 4:26.53. If the goal is already reached, the result says so; if no time could score the gap, it says that too.
Can I score just the first day?
Yes. Any event can stay empty; the headline then reads "after 5 of 10 events" and the day tiles show where the points came from. In sheet 5 the first day alone is worth 3,591.
    Is the outdoor pentathlon included?
Not as a preset. The calculator has five presets: the decathlon for men and women, the outdoor heptathlon for women, and the indoor heptathlon and pentathlon. Single events of those can still be scored on their own by leaving the rest empty.
