What is scientific notation?
Scientific notation expresses any number as a product of two parts: a mantissa between 1 and 10 (exclusive) and a power of 10. The speed of light is 299,792,458 m/s - in scientific notation that becomes 2.998 × 10⁸. The mass of a proton is 0.0000000000000000000000000016726 kg - in scientific notation that is 1.673 × 10⁻²⁷. Engineering notation aligns exponents with SI prefixes (kilo = 10³, mega = 10⁶, milli = 10⁻³, micro = 10⁻⁶). This makes it easy to read values with units: 4.7 × 10⁻⁹ F becomes 4.7 nF (nanofarads) without mental conversion.

Enter 123456789 with 2 significant figures: 1.2 × 10⁸. With 4 figures: 1.235 × 10⁸. With 8 figures: 1.2345679 × 10⁸. Increasing precision keeps more original digits in the mantissa but never changes the exponent. Use 2-3 figures for rough estimates and 6-8 for laboratory work.
How the conversion works
To convert a number to scientific notation: find the position of the first non-zero digit. Move the decimal point so that exactly one non-zero digit is to its left. Count how many places you moved it - that becomes the exponent. Moving left gives a positive exponent (the number was large), moving right gives a negative exponent (the number was small).
