    How scale ratios work

    A scale ratio like 1:100 means one unit on the drawing equals 100 of the same units in reality. So 1 cm on a floor plan represents 100 cm (1 meter) of actual wall. The calculator handles both directions: give it a map measurement and it returns the real-world size, or give it a real dimension and it tells you how long the line on your drawing should be.

    Practical examples

    Floor plan reading: A wall measures 7.2 cm on a 1:100 plan. Real dimension = 7.2 x 100 = 720 cm = 7.2 m. That is the actual length of the wall in the building.
    Scale 1:100 - multiply by 100
    Topographic map distance: Two trailheads are 4.6 cm apart on a 1:50000 map. Real distance = 4.6 x 50000 = 230,000 cm = 2.3 km. A solid morning hike.
    Scale 1:50000 - 1 cm = 500 m
    Model car: A real car is 4.5 m long. At 1:18 scale, the model = 4.5 / 18 = 0.25 m = 25 cm. That matches typical diecast collector models.

    Site plan: You need to check if a 12 m driveway fits on a 1:500 site plan. Map dimension = 12 / 500 = 0.024 m = 2.4 cm on paper. It fits on an A3 sheet easily.

    From map to real and back

    The conversion is straightforward arithmetic. Going from a drawing to reality, you multiply the measured value by the scale factor. Going from reality to a drawing, you divide.

    One common mistake: mixing units. If the scale is 1:50000 and you measure 3 cm, the result is 150,000 cm - not 150,000 km. The unit stays the same on both sides of the equation. Convert afterwards: 150,000 cm = 1,500 m = 1.5 km.

    What does 1:100 scale mean exactly?
    1 unit on the drawing = 100 units in reality. If you measure 3 cm on a 1:100 plan, the real object is 300 cm = 3 meters. The ratio works with any unit - 1 inch on paper equals 100 inches in reality - because both sides use the same unit.
    How do I convert between scales (e.g. 1:50 to 1:100)?
    First convert the drawing measurement to the real dimension using the original scale, then convert the real dimension to the target scale. Example: 4 cm at 1:50 = 200 cm real. At 1:100 that becomes 200 / 100 = 2 cm. Shortcut: multiply by the ratio of the two scale factors (50/100 = 0.5, so 4 x 0.5 = 2).
    Which scale is larger - 1:50 or 1:100?
    1:50 is the larger scale. "Larger scale" means more detail and a bigger representation of the real object. At 1:50, a 10 m wall is 20 cm on paper. At 1:100 the same wall is only 10 cm. Counterintuitively, a smaller denominator means a larger scale.
    Can I use this for Google Maps or satellite imagery?
    Digital maps do not have a fixed scale because you can zoom in and out. However, when you print a map or take a screenshot at a specific zoom level, you can read the scale bar and use this calculator. For Google Earth screenshots, right-click the scale bar to get the exact ratio.
    What scale do model trains use?
    The most popular model railway scales: HO = 1:87, N = 1:160, O = 1:48, Z = 1:220, G = 1:22.5. HO is the most common worldwide. A real locomotive that is 20 m long becomes 20 / 87 = 23 cm in HO scale.
    How do I measure a scale on a plan that does not state one?
    Find an element whose real size you know - a standard door (usually 90 cm wide) or a parking space (2.5 m wide). Measure it on the drawing in cm. Divide the real size by the drawing size: if the door is 0.9 cm on paper, the scale = 90 / 0.9 = 100, so the plan is 1:100.
    What is the difference between a bar scale and a ratio scale?
    A ratio scale (e.g. 1:50000) is a pure number. A bar scale is a graphical ruler printed on the map showing real-world distances. Bar scales remain accurate when you resize or photocopy the map, while ratio scales become invalid if the paper is enlarged or shrunk.
