How to use the water usage calculator - step by step
- Household size - enter the number of people. The calculator adds a baseline of 30 liters per person per day for toilet, cooking and hand-washing.
- Showers per day (per person) - typically 1. Each shower is calculated at 75 liters (an 8-10 minute shower at standard flow).
- Baths per week - total for the whole household. Each bath uses 175 liters - more than double a shower.
- Laundry loads per week - each cycle uses about 60 liters. A family of 4 typically runs 3-5 loads per week.
- Dishwasher cycles per day - each cycle uses only 12.5 liters. Much less than hand-washing (40-60 liters).
