50 m2 lawn - how much grass seed do you need?

Pick your lawn type, measure the area, get the exact seed weight. Five lawn types from utility (25-30 g/m2) to ornamental (45 g/m2), package count in 1 kg and 5 kg bags, and optional cost estimate at your local price per kilogram.

A 50 m2 utility lawn at the standard seeding rate of 27.5 g/m2 needs roughly 2.75 kg per 100 m2 of grass seed. But the number changes with lawn type: a sports lawn jumps to 40 g/m2 and an ornamental show lawn reaches 45 g/m2. Enter 50 below, pick your lawn type, and get the exact weight in kilograms plus how many 1 kg or 5 kg bags to buy.

Lawn seed calculator - seeding rates, bags and cost

Measure your lawn area, pick the lawn type, and get the seed weight in grams and kilograms, plus bag counts for 1 kg and 5 kg packages. A 200 m2 utility lawn at 27.5 g/m2 needs 5.5 kg of seed - that is 2 bags of 5 kg with a small reserve for patching.

How to calculate lawn seed - step by step

    1. Lawn area (m2) - measure length x width of the area to be seeded. Subtract paths, flower beds and structures.
    2. Lawn type - utility (27.5 g/m2), new from scratch (30 g/m2), overseeding (15 g/m2), sports (40 g/m2) or ornamental (45 g/m2).
    3. Seed price (optional) - enter the price per kg from your supplier for a cost estimate.
    4. Read the results - total seed weight, bag count (1 kg and 5 kg), seeding rate and cost.

Quick start - common lawn sizes

    100 m2 utility lawn: 2.75 kg seed, 3 bags x 1 kg or 1 bag x 5 kg. At $12/kg = $33.

    Seeding rate by lawn type

Lawn type Rate (g/m2) Per 100 m2 Best for
Utility 25-30 2.75 kg Home gardens, moderate traffic
New lawn 30 3.0 kg Starting from bare soil
Overseeding 15 1.5 kg Filling bare patches, thickening
Sports 40 4.0 kg Play areas, heavy foot traffic
Ornamental 45 4.5 kg Show lawns, fine-leaved mix

    Scenarios - real-world examples

    Small back garden (50 m2, utility): 50 x 27.5 = 1,375 g = 1.38 kg. Buy 2 x 1 kg bags. Cost at $12/kg: $17.
    Medium front + back (200 m2, new lawn): 200 x 30 = 6,000 g = 6.0 kg. Buy 2 x 5 kg bags (4 kg reserve). Cost at $12/kg: $72.
    Large property (500 m2, utility): 500 x 27.5 = 13,750 g = 13.75 kg. Buy 3 x 5 kg bags. Cost at $10/kg (bulk): $138.
    Patchy lawn repair (150 m2, overseeding): 150 x 15 = 2,250 g = 2.25 kg. Buy 3 x 1 kg bags. Cost at $12/kg: $27.
    Kids' play area (80 m2, sports): 80 x 40 = 3,200 g = 3.2 kg. Buy 1 x 5 kg bag (1.8 kg reserve for re-seeding wear spots). Cost at $15/kg: $48.
    Show lawn (100 m2, ornamental): 100 x 45 = 4,500 g = 4.5 kg. Buy 1 x 5 kg bag. Cost at $22/kg (premium): $99.

    Seed cost comparison

Prices vary widely by blend quality. Here is what 200 m2 of new lawn costs across price tiers:

Seed quality Price/kg 6 kg cost What you get
Budget $5-8 $30-48 Fast germination, coarse texture, lower density
Mid-range $10-15 $60-90 Good mix of ryegrass + fescue, reliable coverage
Premium $18-25 $108-150 Fine fescue blend, dense turf, drought-resistant

    FAQ

When is the best time to sow grass seed?
Early autumn (September-October) is ideal - soil is still warm from summer, rainfall increases, and there is less competition from weeds. Spring (April-May) is the second-best window. Avoid mid-summer heat and winter frost. Soil temperature should be at least 8-10 C for germination.
Should I buy extra seed as a buffer?
Yes. Buy 10-15% more than the calculator suggests. Reasons: uneven spreading, seed blown by wind, birds eating seed, slopes where seed rolls, and inevitable bare patches that need re-seeding after 2-3 weeks. Leftover seed stores well for 2-3 years in a cool, dry place.
What is the difference between overseeding and new lawn rates?
A new lawn starts from bare soil - you need 30 g/m2 for full coverage. Overseeding adds seed to an existing lawn to fill gaps, so you only need 15 g/m2 (half the rate). The existing grass already covers most of the area; you are just filling in.
Does more seed mean a better lawn?
Not necessarily. Over-seeding (too much seed) causes seedlings to compete for water, nutrients and light, producing weak, thin grass. Stick to the recommended rate. If you want a denser lawn, use a higher-quality mix with fine fescue rather than simply adding more seed.
How long until the lawn is ready to walk on?
Germination takes 7-21 days depending on species and temperature. First mow at 6-8 weeks when grass reaches 8-10 cm. Light foot traffic after 8-10 weeks. Full use (sports, play) after 3-4 months. Ornamental lawns may need a full growing season to mature.
1 kg bags or 5 kg bags - which is cheaper?
Almost always 5 kg bags. The per-kg price drops by 15-30% compared to 1 kg packaging. For areas over 150 m2, buying in 5 kg bags saves real money. Store unused seed in an airtight container - it keeps for 2-3 years.
