How many steps are in a mile for a 5'7 woman?
How many miles is 10,000 steps for your height? Convert a step count to miles and kilometers, or a distance to steps, from your height and sex or a step you measured, plus walking time and calories.
A 5'7 woman (170.2 cm) takes about 2,290 walking steps in a mile. The step is 27.7 inches, 0.413 of height, the convention pedometers use, so a 10,000-step day at this height covers about 4.37 miles. Real steps vary with pace and build; walk 20 normal steps and measure them for your own figure. The calculator below is set to one mile at that height; enter steps or another distance, or your measured step, and press Calculate.

How far your steps really go
The same 10,000 steps are 4.17 miles for a 5'4" woman and 4.72 miles for a 6'0" man. The difference is not effort, it is step length. This steps to miles calculator turns a step count into miles and kilometers, or a planned distance into steps, using a step length estimated from your height and sex or one you measured yourself. Add a walking pace and your weight and it also gives the time and the calories for the walk.
Five boxes between a step count and a distance
- Direction - steps to distance, or a distance in miles or kilometers to steps.
- The number - steps from your phone or pedometer (10,000 and 10000 both work), or the distance.
- Step length - estimated from height and sex, or your own measured step in inches or centimeters.
- Walking pace - optional: 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 or 4.0 mph, for the time and the calories.
- Weight - optional, in pounds or kilograms, for the calories.
From height to step length to miles
Pedometers and step apps that have no measured step length fall back on a convention: one step is 0.413 of height for women and 0.415 for men. One step means heel to heel of the opposite foot; a stride is two steps. The calculator multiplies the step by your count and divides by 1,609.344 meters per mile.
How good is the convention? In a gait study of 313 adults published in Sensors, the mean step ran from 0.62 m for people 141 to 150 cm tall to 0.91 m at 191 to 200 cm, with a wide spread inside each height group. A height estimate is a fair average; a measured step is better. Walk 20 normal steps on a sidewalk, measure the distance with a tape and divide by 20.
Steps in a mile by height
Every row is the calculator run at that height with the convention step. The 10,000 column is the distance a 10,000-step day covers.

What a 10,000-step walk costs in time and calories
Calories come from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, where one MET is 1 calorie per kilogram per hour: 3.0 METs at 2.5 mph, 3.8 at 2.8 to 3.4 mph, 4.8 at 3.5 to 3.9 mph and 5.5 at 4.0 to 4.4 mph, all on a level, firm surface. The figure is the total for the walk, including what your body burns at rest. The rows below are a 5'4" woman walking 10,000 steps, 4.17 miles.
| Pace | Time | 150 lb | 200 lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 mph, 3.0 METs | 1 h 40 min | 341 | 454 |
| 3.0 mph, 3.8 METs | 1 h 23 min | 360 | 479 |
| 3.5 mph, 4.8 METs | 1 h 12 min | 389 | 519 |
| 4.0 mph, 5.5 METs | 1 h 3 min | 390 | 520 |
Step facts that surprise people
- Sex barely matters at the same height. The two factors differ by 0.002, so a 5'4" man takes only 11 fewer steps per mile than a 5'4" woman. The gap between the average woman and man comes from height.
- Faster walking burns more per mile, then levels off. In the table above, going from 2.5 to 3.5 mph adds 48 calories over the same 10,000 steps, but 3.5 to 4.0 mph adds only 1, because the time shrinks as fast as the METs grow.
- Weight scales calories in a straight line. A 200 lb walker burns a third more than a 150 lb walker at the same pace and distance.
- Running is a different count. Steps get longer as you speed up, so a height rule for walking undercounts a running mile. The running cadence calculator works from pace and steps per minute instead.
