Simple average grade calculator

Simple or weighted GPA from any grading scale. Enter grades separated by commas, add optional weights for ECTS or credit hours, and get your average with interpretation.

Simple average carries its own coefficients, and those decide the answer. A weighted average moves as much as half a grade away from the simple one once the credit values differ. This page opens the calculator with Simple average already selected, so only the remaining fields are left to fill in. Swap in your own figures and the arithmetic is rebuilt from them.

Grade Average Calculator - simple and weighted GPA in one tool

Two averaging modes in a single form. Enter grades separated by commas, optionally add credit weights, and get your GPA instantly. Works with any numeric scale - US 0-4.0, European 1-10, percentage 0-100 or any other system your school uses.

How to calculate your grade average - step by step

    1. Select averaging type - choose simple (all grades count equally) or weighted (grades multiplied by credit hours or ECTS points). Use weighted when your courses carry different credit loads.
    2. Enter your grades - type all grades separated by commas. Any numeric scale works. For US GPA use values like 3.7, 4.0, 3.3. For percentage systems use 85, 92, 78.
    3. Add weights (optional) - for weighted average, enter the credit value of each course in the same order as grades. Example: a 4-credit A and a 2-credit B-.
    4. Read your results - the calculator shows your average, grade count, lowest and highest grade, and a full breakdown table for weighted averages.

Simple vs weighted average - when does it matter?

    Feature Simple average Weighted average
    Formula sum / count sum(grade x weight) / sum(weights)
Best for Equal-credit courses ECTS, credit hours, mixed loads
    Example (3.0 + 4.0) 3.50 3.60 (weights 2 + 3)
Impact of one low grade Equal to every other grade Depends on its credit weight

A 2.0 in a 1-credit elective barely moves a weighted average. The same 2.0 in a 6-credit core course can drop your GPA by 0.3 points.

    Practical examples

    Example 1: Five courses, simple average - grades 3.7, 4.0, 3.3, 2.7, 3.0
    Result: 3.34 GPA (simple mean)
    Example 2: Same grades with ECTS weights 4, 6, 3, 2, 5
Result: 3.46 weighted GPA (the 4.0 in a 6-credit course pulls it up)
    Example 3: Percentage grades - 85, 92, 78, 90, 88
    Result: 85.00 average percentage
    Example 4: European 1-10 scale - 8, 7, 9, 6, 8 with weights 5, 3, 4, 2, 6
    Result: 7.85 weighted average
    Example 5: Two grades - 4.0 (weight 6) and 2.0 (weight 1)
Result: 3.71 weighted vs 3.00 simple - the weight makes a 0.71 difference

    FAQ - frequently asked questions

What grading scale does this calculator support?
Any numeric scale. US GPA (0-4.0), European (1-10), percentage (0-100), Polish (1-6), or custom. Just enter numbers separated by commas.
What is a weighted average and when should I use it?
A weighted average multiplies each grade by its credit weight before averaging. Use it when your courses carry different credit loads (ECTS points, credit hours, units). A 4-credit A should count more than a 1-credit B.
How do I calculate my semester GPA?
Enter all grades from the semester. If your university uses credit hours, switch to weighted mode and enter the credit value of each course. The result is your semester GPA.
    Can I use letter grades (A, B+, C)?
    Not directly. Convert letters to numbers first: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0. Then enter these numbers. Or use our Grade System Converter to translate between systems.
What happens if I enter wrong weights?
The calculator checks that the number of weights matches the number of grades. If there is a mismatch, it shows an error with both counts so you can fix it.
How accurate is the weighted GPA calculation?
The formula is exact: sum(grade x weight) / sum(weights). Results are rounded to 2 decimal places. This matches the method used by most universities worldwide.
