    Every homemade tincture is a blend of spirit, fruit juice and sugar. The final alcohol content depends on how much each ingredient contributes to the total volume. This calculator takes your five inputs - spirit volume, spirit ABV, juice from maceration, sugar and optional water - and returns the exact ABV of the finished tincture, its strength classification and sweetness category.

    How to calculate tincture ABV - step by step

    1. Spirit volume - measure the milliliters of spirit or vodka poured into the jar. Use a measuring cup or graduated cylinder. Typical amount: 500 ml per 1 kg of fruit.
    2. Spirit strength - read the ABV from the bottle label. Rectified spirit: 95%, diluted spirit: 70%, vodka: 40%.
    3. Juice from maceration - estimate the juice the fruit released. Cherries: 40-60% of mass, raspberries: 50-70%, strawberries: 40-50%, plums: 30-40%.
    4. Sugar - enter grams of added sugar. Each gram of dissolved sugar occupies about 0.6 ml of volume. Leave blank if no sugar added.
    5. Water - enter milliliters of water if used for dilution. Most recipes skip water entirely.
    6. Read the results - the calculator returns ABV, strength class (light/medium/strong/spirit-strength), sweetness category, composition table and contextual warnings.

    ABV formula for tinctures

    The calculation is straightforward dilution math:

    Pure alcohol (ml) = spirit volume x (spirit ABV / 100)
    Sugar volume (ml) = sugar (g) x 0.6
    Total volume (ml) = spirit + juice + sugar volume + water
    Final ABV (%) = pure alcohol / total volume x 100

    Practical examples

    Cherry tincture with 70% spirit: 500 ml spirit, 300 ml juice, 250 g sugar, no water.
    Sugar volume: 150 ml. Total: 950 ml. Pure alcohol: 350 ml.
    Result: 36.8% ABV - strong tincture, semi-sweet (263 g/l)
    Raspberry with vodka (40%): 700 ml vodka, 400 ml juice, 200 g sugar, no water.
    Sugar volume: 120 ml. Total: 1,220 ml. Pure alcohol: 280 ml.
    Result: 23.0% ABV - medium tincture, off-dry (164 g/l)
    Quince with 95% spirit: 400 ml spirit, 150 ml juice, 300 g sugar, 100 ml water.
    Sugar volume: 180 ml. Total: 830 ml. Pure alcohol: 380 ml.
    Result: 45.8% ABV - spirit-strength, sweet (361 g/l)
    Walnut tincture, no sugar: 1,000 ml of 95% spirit, 100 ml juice, 0 g sugar, no water.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    Why does sugar change the ABV?
    Sugar does not add alcohol, but it increases the total volume of the tincture. Each gram of sugar, once dissolved, takes up about 0.6 ml of space. With 300 g of sugar that adds 180 ml to the volume, and since the amount of pure alcohol stays the same, the percentage drops. In a tincture with 500 ml of 70% spirit: without sugar you get 41.2% ABV, with 300 g sugar the same batch drops to about 36.8%.
    What ABV is safe for long-term storage without refrigeration?
    Above 25% ABV the alcohol itself acts as a preservative, and the tincture can be stored at room temperature for years. Between 15-25% refrigeration is recommended and the tincture should be consumed within a few months. Below 15% there is a real risk of refermentation (especially if sugar is present) and mold - treat it like wine.
    Should I use 95% spirit or 40% vodka?
    95% rectified spirit extracts more flavor and color from fruit because alcohol is a better solvent at higher concentrations. The result is a stronger, more aromatic tincture. 40% vodka gives a milder, lighter product but needs more volume to cover the fruit. A middle ground is 70% diluted spirit - strong enough for good extraction, gentle enough not to burn.
    How do I estimate the juice from maceration if I have not strained yet?
    Use the juice yield table above. Multiply your fruit mass by the percentage: 1 kg cherries x 50% = 500 ml juice. This is an estimate - the actual amount depends on how ripe and juicy the fruit was, whether you pricked or crushed it, and how long you macerated. If you already strained, simply measure the liquid volume minus the spirit you originally added.
    Can I add water to lower the ABV?
    Yes. Adding water is a common way to bring a strong tincture down to drinking strength. If your tincture is 45% and you want 30%, the calculator will show you the effect of each additional 100 ml of water. Keep in mind that water can make the tincture cloudy (louche effect) - this is normal and does not affect safety or flavor.
    Why does the calculator show a comparison with a different spirit?
    The comparison line shows what your tincture ABV would be if you used a different strength spirit with the same volume. If you used 70% spirit, it shows the result with 40% vodka, and vice versa. This helps you decide which base alcohol to use next time - without having to recalculate everything manually.
