    Interesting relationships

    The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) golden ratio is 1:16.67 - roughly 60 grams of coffee per liter of water. But this is a starting point, not a rule. Most specialty cafes brew V60 at 1:15 and competition baristas have won with ratios as extreme as 1:12. The right ratio is whichever makes your cup taste good to you.

    Cold brew uses more coffee per volume (1:8) than any hot method, but because extraction happens slowly over 12-24 hours without heat, the result is 67% less acidic than hot-brewed coffee. The concentrate stores in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

    A standard espresso shot uses 15 g of coffee for 30 ml of water (ratio 1:2). That is 10 times more concentrated than drip coffee at 1:16. Yet an espresso has less total caffeine (63 mg) than a 200 ml drip cup (95 mg) simply because the serving size is smaller.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    What is the SCA golden ratio for coffee?
    The Specialty Coffee Association recommends 55-65 grams of coffee per liter of water, which works out to roughly 1:16.67. This produces a balanced extraction between 18-22% of the coffee solids. The calculator's "Medium" setting uses 1:16 for drip and 1:15 for French press and V60, both within this range.
    Why does grind size matter so much?
    Grind size controls extraction rate. Finer grounds have more surface area, so water extracts flavors faster. Espresso needs very fine grounds because contact time is only 25-30 seconds. French press needs coarse grounds because the coffee sits in water for 4 minutes - fine grounds would over-extract and taste bitter. Using the wrong grind size is the most common home-brewing mistake.
    Can I measure coffee with a tablespoon instead of a scale?
    A level tablespoon of ground coffee weighs roughly 5-7 g depending on grind size and how tightly you pack it. For casual brewing this is fine. For consistent results, a kitchen scale accurate to 1 g makes a noticeable difference - especially for espresso and pour-over where 1-2 g changes the taste.
    Is cold brew stronger than espresso?
    Cold brew concentrate (1:8) is more caffeinated per volume than espresso (1:2) because it steeps for 12-24 hours. But you dilute cold brew 1:1 before drinking. After dilution, a 200 ml glass of cold brew has roughly 100-150 mg caffeine - similar to a 200 ml drip coffee and about 2x a single espresso shot (63 mg).
    Why should I not pour boiling water on coffee?
    Boiling water (100C / 212F) extracts bitter compounds from coffee too quickly, especially chlorogenic acid lactones and phenylindanes. The optimal range is 90-96C (195-205F) for hot methods. After boiling, wait 30-60 seconds before pouring. Exception: AeroPress works well with even cooler water (80-85C) because the pressure compensates for lower temperature.
    How long do coffee beans stay fresh after opening?
    Whole beans: 2-4 weeks after roasting (or opening a sealed bag). Ground coffee: 1-2 weeks maximum - surface area increases oxidation dramatically. Store in an airtight container at room temperature, away from light and heat. Do not refrigerate (moisture) and do not freeze opened bags (condensation). Buy in quantities you will finish within 2 weeks.
