How many pizzas do 12 people actually need?

The short answer: it depends on the size of the pizza, the thickness of the crust, and whether your guests had lunch. A 13-inch classic with 8 slices feeds 3 people at medium appetite. Twelve guests at that rate need 4 large pizzas - or just 2 if you go with 18-inch extra large. The math is simple: guests times slices per person, divided by slices per pizza. This calculator does exactly that, then optionally weighs out flour, water and yeast if you want to bake from scratch.

How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Number of guests - enter the total count including yourself. Range: 1-100 people.
    2. Appetite - choose from small (2 slices, kids/light meal), medium (3, typical adult), large (4, big appetite) or extra large (5, hungry crowd). When in doubt, pick medium and round up.
    3. Pizza size - pick a standard diameter or enter a custom one. The calculator shows area in cm2 and approximate square inches.
    4. Crust style - thin and Neapolitan have 6 slices per pie. Classic has 8. Thick/pan has 6 but each slice is denser. This changes how many pizzas you need.
    5. Dough ingredients (optional) - check the box to get baker-percentage dough amounts: flour, water (62% hydration), instant yeast (1%), salt (2%) and olive oil (3%).
    6. Read the results - total pizzas needed, area comparison vs a standard 28 cm, and (if checked) exact dough weights in grams and ounces.

Pizza size comparison - area matters more than diameter

Pizza area grows with the square of the radius. Doubling the diameter quadruples the area. That is why an 18-inch pizza is not twice as big as a 9-inch - it is 4 times bigger.

Size Diameter Area vs 11 in Feeds
    Small 22 cm / ~9 in 380 cm2 62% 1-2
    Medium 28 cm / ~11 in 616 cm2 100% (baseline) 2-3
    Large 32 cm / ~13 in 804 cm2 131% 3-4
    Extra large 45 cm / ~18 in 1,590 cm2 258% 4-6

Dough weight per pizza - by size and crust

Reference dough ball weight for a 28 cm pizza is 270 g. The calculator scales by area ratio and crust thickness factor.

    Size Thin (x0.72) Classic (x1.0) Neapolitan (x0.88) Thick/Pan (x1.38)
    22 cm / 9 in 120 g 167 g 147 g 230 g
    28 cm / 11 in 194 g 270 g 238 g 373 g
    32 cm / 13 in 254 g 353 g 310 g 487 g
    45 cm / 18 in 502 g 697 g 614 g 962 g

    Practical examples

Example 1: Birthday party, 8 kids, small appetite, large pizza (32 cm), classic crust
    8 x 2 slices = 16 slices / 8 per pizza = 2 large pizzas
Example 2: Office lunch, 15 adults, medium appetite, large pizza, classic
    15 x 3 = 45 slices / 8 = 6 large pizzas (48 slices, 3 leftover)
Example 3: Super Bowl party, 10 people, extra large appetite, XL pizza (45 cm), classic
    10 x 5 = 50 slices / 8 = 7 extra large pizzas
Example 4: Homemade Neapolitan night, 4 people, large appetite, 32 cm, dough checked
    4 x 4 = 16 slices / 6 = 3 pizzas. Dough: 553 g flour, 343 ml water, 6 g yeast, 11 g salt, 17 ml olive oil
Example 5: Family dinner, 2 adults + 2 kids, mixed appetite (2 medium + 2 small), medium pizza (28 cm), thin crust
    2x3 + 2x2 = 10 slices / 6 = 2 medium thin-crust pizzas
Example 6: Size comparison: 2 medium (28 cm) vs 1 large (32 cm)
    2 x 616 cm2 = 1,232 cm2 vs 804 cm2. Two mediums give 53% more pizza than one large.

    Common mistakes when ordering

Mistake 1: Thinking a 13-inch pizza is just "a bit bigger" than a 9-inch. It is actually 2.1 times the area. Always compare area (pi x r2), not diameter.
Mistake 2: Ordering for medium appetite when guests are drinking. Alcohol increases appetite by roughly one slice per person. Budget for large appetite at parties with drinks.
Mistake 3: Forgetting that thin crust has fewer slices. A thin-crust 13-inch is cut into 6, not 8. That changes your count from 4 to 5 pizzas for 15 people.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How many slices of pizza does one adult eat on average?
Most adults eat 3 slices of a standard 8-slice pizza. Hungry adults or those at a casual party tend toward 4 slices. Kids under 10 typically eat 1-2 slices. For mixed groups, the calculator lets you pick an average appetite level.
Is it cheaper to order two medium pizzas or one large?
In terms of food per dollar, larger pizzas are almost always a better deal. A 13-inch pizza has 131% of the area of an 11-inch, but rarely costs 31% more. An 18-inch has 258% of the area and usually costs less than 2.5x the price of an 11-inch. Use the area comparison in the results to check.
What hydration level does the dough calculator use?
The dough recipe uses 62% hydration (water as a percentage of flour weight). This produces a workable, slightly sticky dough suitable for home ovens. Neapolitan purists go up to 65-70%, but higher hydration requires more experience and a very hot oven (400C+/750F+). The 1% instant yeast works for a 2-4 hour room-temperature rise.
Can I use the calculator for rectangular or square pizzas?
Not directly - the area formula uses pi x r2 for round pizzas. For a rectangular pizza (like Sicilian or Detroit-style), calculate area as length x width. A 30 x 40 cm rectangular pizza has 1,200 cm2, equivalent to roughly 1.5 standard 32 cm round pizzas. You can use the dough weight table to estimate ingredients by matching area.
How far in advance can I make the dough?
Room temperature: 2-4 hours with 1% instant yeast. Refrigerator (cold ferment): 24-72 hours - reduce yeast to 0.1-0.3% for a slow rise that develops more flavor. Cold-fermented dough has better gluten structure and blisters in the oven. Take it out 1-2 hours before shaping to bring it back to room temperature.
What type of flour should I use for pizza dough?
For Neapolitan-style: Tipo 00 flour (finely milled, 11-12.5% protein) like Caputo Pizzeria. For New York-style: bread flour (12-14% protein) for a chewier crust. All-purpose flour works too but produces a slightly less elastic dough. Avoid cake flour - too low in protein (8%) for proper gluten development.
