Flooring for a 22 ft room - how many packs do you need?

Measure the room, pick laminate, vinyl or hardwood, and get the total area with package count, underlayment and a full cost breakdown. Covers waste allowance for rectangular and irregular rooms.

Planning to floor a room that is 22 feet long? The total number of flooring packs depends on the room width and the material you choose. Laminate comes in packs of about 25 sq ft, vinyl SPC covers roughly 23 sq ft per box, and engineered hardwood gives you around 21.5 sq ft. Enter the room width below, pick your material and waste allowance, and the calculator returns the exact package count with surplus material and a full cost breakdown including underlayment and installation labor.

Three flooring types, one package count

Laminate comes in packs of roughly 25 sq ft. Vinyl SPC planks cover about 23 sq ft per box. Engineered hardwood gives you around 21.5 sq ft. Each material has a different waste profile too - herringbone eats 20% of your material in cuts while a straight run in a rectangular room wastes barely 7-8%. This calculator turns your room dimensions into the exact number of packages you need, with cost estimates for material, underlayment and installation labor.

How to calculate your flooring - step by step

    1. Room length - measure the longest wall in feet. For non-rectangular rooms, measure the bounding rectangle and add 15% waste instead of the standard 10%.
    2. Room width - measure the perpendicular wall. Always round up to the next half-foot.
    3. Number of rooms - if several rooms share identical dimensions, enter the count here instead of calculating each one separately.
    4. Flooring material - laminate (cheapest, AC3-AC5 durability), vinyl SPC (waterproof, quieter underfoot), or engineered hardwood (real wood top layer, highest resale value).
    5. Waste allowance - 10% for simple rectangles, 15% for L-shapes and hallways, 20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
    6. Prices - optionally enter material, underlayment and labor rates to get a full budget estimate.
    7. Read results - the calculator shows total area, package count, surplus material and a cost breakdown.

Flooring coverage and cost by material

Typical coverage per pack and installed cost ranges for the three most common floating-floor materials in the US market.

Material Pack size (sq ft) Material ($/sq ft) Labor ($/sq ft) Lifespan
    Laminate (AC4) 25.3 $1 - $3 $1.50 - $3 15 - 25 years
    Vinyl SPC 23.1 $3 - $6 $2 - $4 20 - 30 years
    Engineered hardwood 21.5 $5 - $12 $3 - $6 25 - 50 years

    Waste allowance by installation pattern

Pattern Waste (%) When to use
Straight run (parallel) 7 - 10% Rectangular rooms, hallways
Staggered / random offset 10 - 12% Most living spaces, open plan
Diagonal (45 degrees) 15 - 18% Visual interest, hides crooked walls
    Herringbone / chevron 18 - 22% High-end hardwood, entryways

    Practical examples

    Example 1: Bedroom 12 x 10 ft, laminate, 10% waste
Area: 132 sq ft - 6 packs (25.3 sq ft each) - surplus: 19.8 sq ft
    Example 2: Living room 20 x 15 ft, vinyl SPC, 10% waste
Area: 330 sq ft - 15 packs (23.1 sq ft each) - surplus: 16.5 sq ft
    Example 3: Master suite 18 x 14 ft, engineered hardwood, 15% waste
Area: 289.8 sq ft - 14 packs (21.5 sq ft each) - surplus: 11.2 sq ft
    Example 4: 3 identical bedrooms, each 11 x 10 ft, laminate, 10% waste
Area: 363 sq ft - 15 packs total - much cheaper than buying per room
    Example 5: Open-plan kitchen-dining 25 x 18 ft, vinyl SPC at $4.50/sq ft + $3/sq ft labor
    Area: 495 sq ft - 22 packs - cost: $2,228 material + $1,485 labor = $3,713

Underlayment types and when to use them

Every floating floor needs underlayment underneath - it absorbs sound, smooths minor subfloor imperfections and adds a moisture barrier. The right type depends on your subfloor and flooring material.

Underlayment Thickness $/sq ft Best for
Standard foam 2-3 mm $0.15 - $0.30 Budget laminate on dry subfloors
Foam + vapor barrier 3 mm $0.25 - $0.60 Laminate over concrete slab
Cork 3-6 mm $0.50 - $1.00 Sound reduction in apartments, hardwood
Rubber (recycled) 3-5 mm $0.60 - $1.20 Premium sound deadening, basements

Some vinyl SPC planks come with built-in underlayment (a cork or IXPE layer bonded to the bottom). If yours do, skip the separate underlayment - doubling up can make the floor feel spongy and void the warranty.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How many packs of laminate do I need for a 200 sq ft room?
With 10% waste, that is 220 sq ft. At 25.3 sq ft per pack, you need 9 packs. The extra pack gives you replacement planks for future damage.
Do I really need 10% waste allowance for a simple rectangular room?
Yes. Even in a perfect rectangle, the last plank in every row needs cutting. That first and last plank generate offcuts. A 10% allowance covers starter pieces, end cuts and the occasional damaged plank from the box. Going below 8% risks running short mid-install.
What is the difference between SPC and LVT vinyl flooring?
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) has a rigid limestone core - dent-resistant, waterproof, installs over minor subfloor imperfections. LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is more flexible, quieter underfoot, but needs a flatter subfloor. Both are waterproof. SPC is currently the more popular choice for residential projects.
Can I install laminate in a bathroom or kitchen?
Standard laminate swells when exposed to standing water. For bathrooms and kitchens, use waterproof vinyl SPC or water-resistant laminate with a wax-sealed locking system. Even water-resistant laminate should not be submerged - wipe spills within 30 minutes.
How much does professional flooring installation cost?
National average: laminate $1.50-3/sq ft, vinyl SPC $2-4/sq ft, engineered hardwood $3-6/sq ft. Add $0.50-1.50/sq ft for old floor removal and $1-2/sq ft if the subfloor needs leveling. Herringbone pattern adds 30-50% to labor cost.
Should I buy extra packs for future repairs?
Keep 2-3 extra planks from the same production batch. Colors vary between batches, so a replacement plank bought a year later may not match. Store them flat in a climate-controlled space. This is especially important for engineered hardwood where color matching is critical.
