Building a 30 foot long brick wall? The brick count depends on the wall height, thickness and joint size. A single-wythe wall at 8 ft tall with standard bricks and 3/8 in joints uses about 6.55 bricks per square foot of face area. How to estimate bricks and mortar - step by step
- Wall length - measure the full length in feet. For L-shaped walls, add both legs together if the height is the same.
- Wall height - measure from the foundation or footing to the top course. Standard garden wall: 3-6 ft. Residential interior: 8-9 ft.
- Wall thickness - single wythe (4 in) for veneer and garden walls, double wythe (8 in) for structural walls.
- Brick type - standard solid, cored/hollow, clinker or modular. All standard US bricks are 8 x 3.75 x 2.25 in (modular is slightly smaller).
- Joint thickness - standard mortar joint is 3/8 in. Thicker joints (1/2 in) use more mortar but fewer bricks.
- Waste allowance - 5% for straight runs, 10% for walls with corners and openings, 15% for arches and curves.
- Openings - subtract window and door areas. Standard window: ~15 sq ft, entry door: ~20 sq ft.
- Read results - brick count, mortar volume in cubic feet, and bag count for both 60 lb and 80 lb mortar bags.

Mortar types and where to use them
Not all mortar is interchangeable. Building codes specify different types depending on the wall's function, exposure and load.

When in doubt, use Type S - it covers most residential applications and handles freeze-thaw cycles well. Type M is overkill for above-grade walls and can actually crack softer bricks because it is less flexible.

Clinker bricks are fired at higher temperatures (over 2,000 F) which fuses the clay and makes them nearly waterproof. That low absorption rate is why clinker outperforms standard brick in freeze-thaw climates - water cannot get in to expand and crack.
