    1. Fuel used = distance (km) x consumption (L/100 km) / 100
    2. Fuel cost = fuel used (L) x price per liter ($)
    3. Total cost = fuel cost + tolls and fees

    Extra weight and consumption - what a full car costs

    Every additional 100 kg of passenger and luggage weight increases fuel consumption by roughly 0.3-0.7 L/100 km depending on engine size and driving style. A car with 4 adults and weekend bags carries about 300 kg more than a solo driver - expect 1-2 L/100 km higher consumption. The calculator uses the figure you enter, so check your trip computer after a loaded trip for the most accurate split.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    Does the driver pay too?
    Yes. The calculator splits costs equally among all riders including the driver. This is the standard carpooling arrangement: the driver provides the car and drives, but fuel costs are shared equally.
    What about car wear, insurance and depreciation?

    Is carpooling cheaper than the bus or train?
    With 3+ riders, carpooling almost always beats public transit on cost. A 300 km trip with 3 people costs about $10-12 per person in fuel. A bus ticket for the same route: $15-30. A train: $25-50. With 4-5 riders, the gap widens further.
    Should I include the return trip in the distance?
    Yes - enter the total distance both ways. If you drive 150 km to a destination and 150 km back, enter 300 km. For daily commutes, enter the round-trip distance (e.g. 15 km one way = 30 km).
    How do I find people to carpool with?
    BlaBlaCar, Facebook groups, company bulletin boards, neighborhood apps (Nextdoor). For daily commutes, coworkers living in the same area are the best option - same schedule, same destination.
    What consumption figure should I use?
    Use your real-world figure from the trip computer, not the manufacturer spec. City driving: 7-12 L/100 km. Highway cruising: 5-8 L/100 km. With a full car (4-5 people + luggage), add 0.5-1.0 L extra.
