A vendor promises delivery "within 30 business days." You signed on March 15. So when exactly should you expect the package? Not April 14 - that is 30 calendar days. Business days skip weekends. And if there is a federal holiday in the middle, that gets skipped too. The real deadline lands somewhere around April 28, give or take a holiday. Somewhere. Give or take. That is not good enough when money is on the line.
Three calculators in the Date & Time section handle the math that calendars make surprisingly hard: counting working days between dates, measuring how many hours a shift actually lasted, and finding the exact gap between two dates in months and days.
571 business days in 833 calendar days
Between March 15, 2024 and June 25, 2026 there are 833 calendar days. How many of those are actual working days? The Business Days Calculator returns 571.
That means 262 days - nearly a third of the range - are weekends and holidays. The breakdown: 238 weekend days and 24 federal holidays. Only 69% of the calendar consists of workdays.
This ratio holds roughly constant across any multi-year span. Useful for project planning:
| Calendar days | Approximate business days | Weekends + holidays |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 21-22 | 8-9 |
| 60 | 42-44 | 16-18 |
| 90 | 63-65 | 25-27 |
| 365 | 250-252 | 113-115 |
The calculator has two options that change the count. "Exclude US federal holidays" subtracts the 10 standard ones - New Year, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. "Count Saturdays as working days" adds them back in, which matters for retail, healthcare and anyone on a 6-day schedule.
Here is the thing people get wrong most often: "30 business days" and "one month" are not interchangeable. One calendar month might contain 20, 21, 22 or 23 business days depending on where weekends fall and whether a holiday lands in the middle. February 2026 has only 20. March has 22. The phrase "within 30 business days" means roughly 6 weeks, not 4.
An 8-hour shift that is actually 8 hours
Clock in at 08:30. Clock out at 17:15. Lunch break: 45 minutes. How many hours did you work? The mental math is not hard, but it is easy to get wrong - especially with odd start times, variable breaks, or shifts that cross midnight.
The Hours Calculator does this in three modes. Work Time mode takes a start time, end time and break duration. The result for an 08:30 to 17:15 shift with a 45-minute break: 8 hours exactly, or 8.00 in decimal format.
The decimal output matters for timesheets. Payroll systems want 8.00, not "eight hours." And the conversion from minutes to decimals trips people up constantly - 30 minutes is 0.50, not 0.30. 45 minutes is 0.75, not 0.45.
The second mode converts raw hours into other units. Feed it 2,000 hours and get back:
| Unit | Value |
|---|---|
| Calendar days (24h) | 83.33 |
| Work days (8h) | 250 |
| Work weeks (40h) | 50 |
| Work months (160h) | 12.5 |
So 2,000 hours per year is 50 work weeks - the standard full-time number in the US after 2 weeks of vacation. One quick division confirms whether your annual hours look right.
The third mode is an earnings calculator. Plug in hours and an hourly rate, get the gross pay. Simple, but it also shows the daily, weekly and monthly equivalent - helpful when comparing a freelance rate to a salaried position.
Night shifts get their own checkbox. Working from 22:00 to 06:30? Check "Shift crosses midnight" and the calculator adds 24 hours before subtracting. Without it, 06:30 minus 22:00 gives a negative number.
1 month and 13 days
How long is "a month"? January has 31 days. February has 28. The answer depends on which month you are counting from. The Months Calculator removes the ambiguity.
From July 1 to August 14: 1 month and 13 days. That is 44 calendar days, 6 full weeks and 2 extra days, approximately 0.08 years. The calculator also tells you both dates fall on weekdays - Wednesday and Friday.
The full breakdown mode splits the difference into years, months and remaining days. Handy for lease durations, employment tenure and age calculations where "about two and a half years" is not precise enough.
Practical uses people do not think about until they need them:
- Notice periods: A 3-month notice starting June 15 ends September 15, not "sometime in September."
- Lease calculations: A 24-month lease signed March 1 expires March 1 two years later - but if the contract says "24 calendar months," does the last day count? The calculator shows you the exact span.
- Pregnancy tracking: 40 weeks from a given date. Months are approximate, weeks are standard, and the difference between "9 months" and "40 weeks" is about 5 days.
- Project milestones: "The MVP is due 6 months from kickoff." If kickoff was January 31, six months later is July 31. But if kickoff was August 31, six months later is February 28 (or 29 in a leap year). The calculator handles the edge cases.
When business days and months collide
The real confusion starts when contracts mix units. "Payment due within 2 months or 45 business days, whichever comes first." Now you need both calculators. Two months from July 1 is September 1. Forty-five business days from July 1, skipping weekends and Labor Day, lands around September 2. In this case the two-month deadline wins by one day. Change the start date to December 1, and Thanksgiving plus Christmas push the 45 business days out to February 3 - well past the 2-month mark of February 1.
The gap between business time and calendar time grows wider in November and December when holidays cluster. It shrinks in months with no holidays - April, June, August. Knowing the difference saves real money in late-payment penalties and contract disputes.
