Midnight is 12 AM. Not 12 PM. If that felt obvious, try this one: you worked 8 hours and 45 minutes, and the timesheet field says "enter decimal hours." So you type 8.45. The payroll system pays you for 8 hours and 27 minutes. You just lost 18 minutes of wages because 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour, not 0.45.
These are not rare mistakes. They happen constantly - every time someone crosses the boundary between two systems that count time differently. A 24-hour clock vs a 12-hour clock. An HH:MM notation vs a decimal one. A calendar date vs the weekday it falls on. The 12-hour trap
Most of Europe, Asia and Latin America use 24-hour time. The United States, Canada and Australia use 12-hour time with AM and PM. The conversion is simple for most hours: subtract 12 from anything above 12 and add PM. But two hours break the pattern, and they break it in a way that catches even experienced travelers.
00:00 is 12:00 AM. Not 0:00 AM. Not 12:00 PM. The 12 appears out of nowhere because the 12-hour system has no zero hour. Midnight starts the AM cycle, so it gets labeled 12 AM - counterintuitive, but consistent within the system. AM stands for ante meridiem: before noon. Midnight is the furthest point before noon you can get.
12:00 is 12:00 PM. Not 12:00 AM. The number stays the same but the suffix flips. Noon starts the PM cycle. If you schedule a meeting for "12 PM" most people understand it as lunchtime - but try booking a medical appointment for "12 AM" and watch the receptionist pause.

The rule going the other direction is almost as simple. AM hours keep their number (except 12 AM becomes 00). PM hours get 12 added (except 12 PM stays 12). Two exceptions, that is it. But those two exceptions cause enough confusion that the converter sees steady traffic year-round.
Aviation figured this out decades ago. Saying "zero three hundred" leaves zero room for misinterpretation. Hospitals, emergency dispatchers and server logs followed the same logic. The 12-hour system survives mostly in everyday speech and on kitchen clocks - everywhere else, 24-hour time won.
45 minutes is not 0.45 hours
Clock time uses base 60. Decimal time uses base 10. When someone works 8:45 (eight hours and forty-five minutes), the decimal equivalent is 8.75 - because 45 divided by 60 is 0.75. Not 0.45. The period is not a colon, and the math is not the same.
