AAA puts the average annual cost of car ownership somewhere between $10,000 and $12,000. That number lands on a page most people never read. What they do read is the fuel receipt - $60, $75, maybe $90 on a bad week. The rest vanishes into automatic debits: insurance in January, tires in April, brake pads in October, the inspection fee nobody remembers paying.

Add it up for a gasoline sedan doing 20,000 km a year and you land at $11,430. Not a rough estimate. That is fuel at $2,400, insurance at $2,000, service and tires at $1,950, parking and tolls at $2,580, and depreciation quietly eating $2,500 of the car's value while it sits in the driveway.

And somewhere in that equation, four rubber circles are slowly wearing down. Run them 6 PSI below the door sticker recommendation - easy to do after a cold snap - and those tires lose roughly 25% of their total lifespan. The same set that should have lasted 64,000 km now gives up at 48,000. That is a $150 mistake made with a $3 tire gauge.

Myth 1: "The door sticker pressure works for every situation"

It does not. The number on the driver-side door jamb assumes one or two passengers, no cargo, summer temperatures, city speeds. Load up five adults and 220 pounds of luggage for a winter highway trip and that base pressure is dangerously low.

The physics is straightforward. More weight compresses the tire sidewall, reducing the contact patch shape and generating more heat. Cold air contracts inside the tire, dropping pressure further. Highway speeds add thermal stress on top.

Myth 2: "My tires are fine - I checked them last year"

Tread wears at roughly 1.0 mm per 10,000 km for summer tires under normal driving conditions. That rate jumps to 1.4 mm with aggressive driving - hard braking, fast cornering, rapid acceleration. The difference over a tire's life: a calm driver gets 80,000 km from the same set that an aggressive driver burns through in 45,714 km.

Myth 3: "My car costs about $300 a month"

For fuel alone, maybe. The full picture is larger.

Myth 4: "Electric cars are cheaper to own"

Per kilometer of energy, yes. An EV consuming 17 kWh/100 km at home charging rates ($0.12/kWh) costs $0.02/km in electricity. A gasoline car at 7.5 L/100 km and $1.60/L costs $0.12/km. That is an 83% reduction in energy cost.

But ownership cost is not just energy. EV insurance premiums run 20-30% higher than comparable gasoline cars. Battery degradation is real - 2-3% capacity loss per year means a replacement discussion at year 8-10 costing $5,000-15,000. Tire wear on EVs is higher due to instant torque - heavier tires wear 20-30% faster.

Myth 5: "Tire rotation is a dealer upsell"

On FWD cars - which account for about 60% of vehicles on the road - the front tires handle steering, most of the braking force and all of the acceleration. They wear roughly 30% faster than the rears. After 30,000 km without rotation, the fronts might be at 4 mm while the rears still have 6 mm. You end up replacing the fronts early while perfectly good rubber sits on the back.

Rotation every 10,000 km equalizes the wear. Four tires reach replacement depth at roughly the same time, extending the total set life by 15-20%. On a $600 set, that is $90-120 saved per set - or about $30-40 per year. Not life-changing money, but free money for 20 minutes of work.

AWD owners get more even wear by default, but rotation still helps - every 12,000-15,000 km is plenty.
