    A fresh fill of full synthetic oil has a service window of roughly 15,000 km or 12 months - whichever comes first. At 8,500 km on the odometer you are 56.7% through the mileage interval. This calculator tracks both distance and time, shows a visual progress bar and tells you exactly when the next change is due. It covers four oil grades - from mineral at 7,000 km to long-life synthetic at 30,000 km - and adjusts for petrol, diesel, hybrid and LPG engines.

    How to use this calculator - step by step

    1. Oil type - select the grade currently in your engine. Check the oil bottle label or your service book. Most modern cars from European manufacturers use full synthetic (5W-30 or 5W-40).
    2. Distance since last change (km) - enter the kilometers driven since the last oil change. If you reset your trip meter at each service, read it directly. Otherwise, subtract the odometer reading at last service from the current reading.
    3. Average daily distance (optional) - enter your typical daily driving distance. The calculator uses this to estimate when you will hit the next change threshold. Commuters average 30-50 km/day; sales reps 80-150 km/day.

    Short trips are harder on oil than highway cruises.

    An engine that never reaches full operating temperature (90-100 C) accumulates moisture and fuel dilution in the oil. A 5 km commute in cold weather can be more damaging than a 500 km motorway run. If most of your trips are under 10 km, cut the change interval by 30-50%.

    Oil does not "wear out" - it gets contaminated.

    The base oil molecules are remarkably stable. What degrades are the additive packages: detergents that suspend soot, anti-wear agents (ZDDP) that coat metal surfaces and viscosity index improvers that keep the oil flowing at the right thickness. Once additives are depleted, the base oil alone cannot protect the engine.

    Time limit exists even for parked cars.

    A car parked in a garage for 18 months with only 2,000 km on the oil still needs a change. Moisture condenses inside the crankcase, acids form from blow-by gases and seals dry out. The 12-month (or 24 for Long Life) time cap is just as important as the mileage limit.

    Diesel engines with DPF need low-SAPS oil.

    Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are sensitive to ash from oil additives. Using standard oil in a DPF-equipped diesel can clog the filter prematurely - a repair costing $1,000-$3,000. Always check for ACEA C3/C4 or manufacturer-specific approvals (e.g. VW 507.00, MB 229.52).

    Example 1 - Fresh synthetic: Full synthetic oil, 3,000 km on the clock.
    Status: OK - Oil is fresh (20.0%). Remaining: 12,000 km. At 50 km/day you have roughly 240 days left.
    Example 2 - Halfway point: Semi-synthetic, 5,500 km driven.
    Status: Halfway through interval (55.0%). Remaining: 4,500 km. Time to start watching the odometer.
    Example 3 - Diesel overdue: Full synthetic, 14,200 km, diesel engine.
    Status: Warning - Schedule a change (94.7%). Only 800 km remaining. Book a service this week.
    Example 4 - Time-based trigger: Long Life synthetic, only 8,000 km but oil changed 22 months ago.
    Mileage says 26.7% used. But time says 22/24 months - approaching the time limit. Change within 2 months regardless of km.
    Example 5 - Mineral in an older car: Mineral oil, 6,800 km.
    Status: URGENT (97.1%). Only 200 km left on a 7,000 km interval. The oil filter is likely saturated too - change both immediately.

    FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    Can I mix synthetic and mineral oil?
    Technically yes - modern oils are compatible and mixing will not cause immediate damage. But blending a full synthetic with mineral oil reduces the performance of the synthetic and shortens the effective change interval. If you top up with a different grade in an emergency, plan to do a full change sooner than the original schedule. Never mix oil viscosity grades (e.g. 5W-30 with 10W-40) unless the manufacturer approves both for your engine.
    Is Long Life oil really good for 30,000 km?
    Only under ideal conditions and in engines specifically designed for it (BMW, VW/Audi/Skoda with LL service, Mercedes). These engines have larger oil sumps, advanced filtration and oil quality sensors. Running Long Life oil in a car not designed for it - or in severe conditions (city traffic, short trips, towing) - is risky. Many independent mechanics recommend changing even Long Life oil at 15,000-20,000 km as insurance. The cost of an extra oil change is far less than an engine repair.
    How does LPG affect oil change intervals?
    LPG and CNG burn cleaner than petrol, producing less soot and carbon deposits. However, LPG runs at higher combustion temperatures, which accelerates oil oxidation. The net effect depends on your driving pattern. Most manufacturers recommend keeping the same interval as petrol (15,000 km for synthetic) but some mechanics suggest reducing it by 10-15% for LPG. If your engine runs LPG full-time with lots of highway driving, consider 12,000-13,000 km intervals instead of 15,000.
    Should I change the oil filter every time?
    Yes - always. A clogged filter forces oil through a bypass valve, sending unfiltered oil directly to the bearings and camshaft. A new filter costs $5-$15 and takes 2 minutes to install during an oil change. There is no good reason to skip it. Some service shops try to save by reusing filters - this is false economy that can cause thousands in engine damage.
    What happens if I exceed the change interval?
    Going 1,000-2,000 km over on synthetic oil is unlikely to cause immediate harm. The additive package degrades gradually, not all at once. But running 5,000+ km over the interval - especially with mineral oil - risks sludge formation, increased wear on bearings and piston rings, and reduced fuel economy. The oil filter also becomes saturated, letting contaminants circulate freely. In extreme cases, sludge can block oil galleries and starve the engine of lubrication entirely.
    How much does an oil change cost?
    DIY cost: $30-$60 for 4-5 liters of quality synthetic oil plus a filter. Workshop cost: $60-$150 depending on the oil grade and labor rate. Dealer service: $100-$250+. Long Life oils cost more per liter but the extended interval often makes the annual cost similar. Skipping or delaying an oil change to save $50-$100 can lead to engine repairs costing $2,000-$8,000. Oil changes are the cheapest form of engine insurance.
