A fresh fill of full synthetic oil has a service window of roughly 15,000 km or 12 months - whichever comes first. At 8,500 km on the odometer you are 56.7% through the mileage interval. This calculator tracks both distance and time, shows a visual progress bar and tells you exactly when the next change is due. It covers four oil grades - from mineral at 7,000 km to long-life synthetic at 30,000 km - and adjusts for petrol, diesel, hybrid and LPG engines.
How to use this calculator - step by step
- Oil type - select the grade currently in your engine. Check the oil bottle label or your service book. Most modern cars from European manufacturers use full synthetic (5W-30 or 5W-40).
- Distance since last change (km) - enter the kilometers driven since the last oil change. If you reset your trip meter at each service, read it directly. Otherwise, subtract the odometer reading at last service from the current reading.
- Average daily distance (optional) - enter your typical daily driving distance. The calculator uses this to estimate when you will hit the next change threshold. Commuters average 30-50 km/day; sales reps 80-150 km/day.
- Date of last change (optional) - enter the date of your last oil change. Oil degrades over time even when the car is parked - moisture and acid buildup do not stop when the engine is off.
- Engine type (optional) - diesel engines with DPF filters require low-SAPS oil. LPG engines run hotter and may need shorter intervals.

Did you know?
An engine that never reaches full operating temperature (90-100 C) accumulates moisture and fuel dilution in the oil. A 5 km commute in cold weather can be more damaging than a 500 km motorway run. If most of your trips are under 10 km, cut the change interval by 30-50%.
The base oil molecules are remarkably stable. What degrades are the additive packages: detergents that suspend soot, anti-wear agents (ZDDP) that coat metal surfaces and viscosity index improvers that keep the oil flowing at the right thickness. Once additives are depleted, the base oil alone cannot protect the engine.
A car parked in a garage for 18 months with only 2,000 km on the oil still needs a change. Moisture condenses inside the crankcase, acids form from blow-by gases and seals dry out. The 12-month (or 24 for Long Life) time cap is just as important as the mileage limit.
Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are sensitive to ash from oil additives. Using standard oil in a DPF-equipped diesel can clog the filter prematurely - a repair costing $1,000-$3,000. Always check for ACEA C3/C4 or manufacturer-specific approvals (e.g. VW 507.00, MB 229.52).

Status: OK - Oil is fresh (20.0%). Remaining: 12,000 km. At 50 km/day you have roughly 240 days left.
Status: Halfway through interval (55.0%). Remaining: 4,500 km. Time to start watching the odometer.
Status: Warning - Schedule a change (94.7%). Only 800 km remaining. Book a service this week.
Mileage says 26.7% used. But time says 22/24 months - approaching the time limit. Change within 2 months regardless of km.
Status: URGENT (97.1%). Only 200 km left on a 7,000 km interval. The oil filter is likely saturated too - change both immediately.
