- Animal - dog or cat. This sets the baseline of 60 or 50 ml per kg.
- Body weight and unit - pounds or kilograms, whichever your scale gives you.
- Activity level - for the day you are actually planning, not the animal in general.
- Air temperature - the biggest single multiplier in the calculation, up to 1.8 times.
- Food type - decides how much of the requirement arrives with the food rather than the bowl.
- Read the drinking figure and measure it once with a jug, so you know what your own bowl holds.
- Note the vet threshold - it is the level at which the drinking becomes a symptom rather than a habit.

The two rows that read "over" are the point of the exercise as much as the ones that read "short". A cat on canned food that ignores the water bowl is behaving exactly as the arithmetic predicts, and an owner who knows that stops worrying about the wrong thing.

Moderate activity, normal temperature, dry food. The last column is the level at which sustained intake stops being a preference and becomes a clinical sign worth investigating: 100 ml per kg for dogs, 60 ml per kg for cats, because normal feline intake tops out far lower.
