    How do I read a tire size like 205/55 R16?
    Three numbers, each means something different. 205 = tread width in millimeters. 55 = aspect ratio (sidewall height is 55% of the width, so 205 x 0.55 = 112.75 mm). R16 = radial construction, 16-inch rim diameter. Together they determine the total diameter and circumference of the mounted wheel.
    What is the maximum allowed speedometer error?
    EU regulations (ECE R39) allow the speedometer to read fast (show more than actual speed) but never slow (never show less than actual). The formula: indicated speed must be between V + 0 and V x 1.1 + 4 km/h, where V is true speed. At a true 100 km/h, the speedometer can show up to 114 km/h but never below 100 km/h. Most manufacturers set speedometers to read about 3-5% fast from the factory.
    Does tire wear change the circumference?
    Yes, but not by much. A brand-new tire has about 8 mm of tread depth. A worn tire (at the legal minimum of 1.6 mm) has lost 6.4 mm of rubber - that reduces the total diameter by about 13 mm (6.4 mm from each side). For a 205/55 R16 tire, that changes the circumference from about 1,985 mm (new) to 1,944 mm (worn) - roughly a 2% difference. Your speedometer reads slightly faster as tires wear.
    What is plus-sizing and how does it work?
    Plus-sizing means going up one or two rim sizes while keeping the overall tire diameter roughly the same. You increase the rim diameter and compensate with a lower aspect ratio. Example: 205/55 R16 (632 mm diameter) upgraded to 225/45 R17 (634 mm diameter) - nearly identical overall size but wider tread and sportier look.     Why do wider tires not always mean more grip?
    Wider tires spread the vehicle's weight over a larger contact patch, which helps on dry roads. But on wet surfaces, a wider tire has to push more water out of the way, increasing the risk of aquaplaning. In snow, a narrower tire often performs better because it creates higher pressure per square centimeter, cutting through to the road surface. That is why many drivers switch to narrower tires for winter (e.g. 195/65 R15 winter instead of 225/45 R17 summer).
    How do I calculate revolutions per mile instead of per kilometer?
    Multiply the revolutions per kilometer by 1.60934. Example: a 205/55 R16 tire does 506 rev/km, which is 506 x 1.60934 = 814 rev/mile. Alternatively, divide 1,609,344 mm (one mile) by the tire circumference in mm. For American tire sizes (like P215/60R16), the calculation is identical - the numbers on US tires use the same metric-imperial hybrid system as everywhere else.
